3D Scanning information

What are some common challenges faced by 3D scanning professionals during on-site data collection?

3D scanning professionals often encounter challenges such as varying lighting conditions, tight or inaccessible spaces, and the presence of reflective or transparent surfaces that can interfere with accurate data capture. Additionally, working in dynamic environments where people or equipment are moving can require multiple scans and careful data alignment. Being prepared to adapt scanning techniques and using the right equipment for each scenario is key to ensuring high-quality results and minimizing post-processing workload.

What is 3D scanning?

3D scanning is the process of analyzing a real-world object or environment to collect data on its shape and appearance. This data is then used to create a digital 3D model, which can be used for various applications such as manufacturing, animation, virtual reality, and quality inspection. 3D scanning technologies include laser scanners, structured light scanners, and photogrammetry, each suited for different types of objects and accuracy requirements. The resulting models help streamline design processes, enable reverse engineering, and enhance digital archiving.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D Scanning Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Scanning Specialist, you need expertise in geometry, spatial awareness, and a solid understanding of digital imaging, often supported by a background in engineering, design, or a related field. Familiarity with 3D scanning hardware (such as laser or structured light scanners), point cloud processing software, and CAD systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are essential soft skills for accurately capturing and interpreting complex data. These abilities ensure high-quality, precise 3D models that are crucial for applications in manufacturing, architecture, and product design.

Job description

Summary

Industrial Inspection & Analysis (IIA) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Metrology Scanning Technician to join our team in Minnetonka, Minnesota.

This position supports advanced dimensional inspection, reverse engineering, 3D scanning, and industrial CT scanning projects for customers across aerospace, medical device, defense, additive manufacturing, consumer products, and industrial manufacturing industries. Working alongside experienced metrology professionals, you will gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge inspection and measurement technologies while developing skills that support long-term career growth in metrology, quality, engineering, and nondestructive testing.

At IIA, quality is more than a process—it's who we are. We are committed to delivering accurate data, exceptional customer service, and technical expertise that helps our customers solve complex manufacturing and engineering challenges.

This position involves access to export-controlled technical data, defense-related products, and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). Employees are expected to follow all company, customer, and regulatory requirements related to data protection, cybersecurity, confidentiality, and export compliance.

Equipment & Software You'll Work With

Equipment

  • Industrial CT Scanners
  • Laser Scanners
  • Structured Light 3D Scanners
  • Portable CMM Arms
  • Vision Measurement Systems
  • Precision Hand Measurement Tools

Software

  • PolyWorks
  • VGStudio MAX
  • Geomagic Design X
  • Geomagic Wrap
  • SolidWorks
  • Microsoft Office

What You'll Do

3D Scanning & Data Collection

  • Operate advanced 3D scanning systems including laser, structured light, portable CMM arm, and computed tomography (CT) scanning.
  • Capture high-accuracy geometric data from manufactured components, assemblies, tools, and prototypes.
  • Prepare parts and scanning setups to optimize data quality and project efficiency.
  • Process, align, and clean scan data to produce point clouds, meshes, inspection datasets, and engineering deliverables.

Inspection & Metrology

  • Perform dimensional inspections using scan data, portable CMM arms, vision systems, optical measurement systems, and conventional measurement tools.
  • Conduct CAD-to-part, part-to-part, and deviation analysis using metrology software.
  • Generate inspection reports and communicate results clearly to customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Support first article inspections (FAI), root cause investigations, product validation, and engineering studies.

Reverse Engineering & Engineering Support

  • Assist with reverse engineering projects through scan-based geometry recreation and CAD model development.
  • Support engineering teams by providing accurate digital representations of physical components.
  • Collaborate with customers to understand technical requirements and recommend appropriate measurement solutions.

Customer Service & Project Execution

  • Deliver projects accurately, professionally, and on schedule.
  • Maintain strong communication with customers and coworkers throughout project execution.
  • Contribute to a culture centered on service, integrity, safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain equipment, workspaces, and laboratories in a clean, organized, and customer-ready condition.
