What jobs can 3D modeling get you?

3D machine modeling skills can lead to jobs such as 3D modeler, CAD designer, product designer, or visualization specialist in industries like manufacturing, gaming, film, and architecture. These roles often require proficiency with modeling software like AutoCAD, Blender, or SolidWorks and may involve collaboration with engineers or artists. Job opportunities can be found in design firms, manufacturing companies, entertainment studios, and architectural firms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D Machine Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Machine Modeler, you need strong skills in 3D modeling, mechanical design principles, and a background in engineering or industrial design. Proficiency with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, or Siemens NX, along with relevant certifications, is typically required. Attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for translating concepts into precise models and collaborating with engineering teams. These skills and qualities ensure accurate, manufacturable designs that meet technical specifications and project goals.

What is 3D machine modeling?

3D machine modeling is the process of creating three-dimensional digital representations of machines or mechanical components using specialized computer software. These models help engineers and designers visualize, test, and refine machines before they are physically built. 3D machine modeling is widely used in industries such as manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and robotics to improve design accuracy and efficiency. The process often involves using CAD (Computer-Aided Design) programs to create detailed, precise models that can be used for simulations, prototyping, and production.

Is 3D modeling a high paying job?

3D machine modeling can be a well-paying profession, especially for those with advanced skills in CAD software, 3D rendering, and experience in industries like manufacturing or gaming. Salaries vary based on experience, location, and specialization, with senior roles often offering higher compensation.

What are some common challenges faced by 3D Machine Modelers when collaborating with engineering teams?

3D Machine Modelers often work closely with engineers to ensure that models accurately reflect technical specifications and functional requirements. A common challenge is translating complex engineering data into visually precise and manufacturable 3D models while keeping up with frequent design changes. Effective communication is essential to resolve discrepancies and maintain alignment on project goals. Additionally, modelers must balance aesthetic considerations with mechanical feasibility, requiring both creative and technical problem-solving skills.

How much do 3D modellers get paid?

3D machine modelers typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, industry, and location. Skilled modelers proficient in software like Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max and with a strong portfolio tend to command higher salaries.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development and deployment of 4D world models and generative systems for sensor and semantics generation in simulation use cases.

  • Architect and implement scalable and robust ML pipelines for training, evaluating, and deploying large-scale generative models into simulation infrastructure.

  • Build and scale production-ready video generation techniques to create dynamic and interactive simulation environments.

Job description

The Simulator Team at Waymo builds state-of-the-art simulations of realistic environments for testing, training, and validation of the Waymo Driver. Our team is a diverse, and collaborative group of machine learning (ML) engineers, software engineers, and ML research engineers. We develop industry-leading simulation solutions using advanced generative and reconstructive ML algorithms, to model the real world, encompassing realistic agents, roads, traffic systems, weather, and the full sensor suite (Camera, Lidar, Radar).

To accelerate the fidelity, scalability, controllability, and richness of our simulations, we are pushing the frontiers of 3D world modeling. We leverage state-of-the-art ML technologies trained on large-scale datasets to create dynamic and semantically rich virtual worlds, directly impacting the development and validation of the Waymo Driver.

In this role, you will report to a Senior Staff Engineering Manager.

You will:

  • Lead the design, development and deployment of cutting-edge 4D world models and generative systems for ultra-realistic and controllable sensor and semantics generation for simulation use cases at waymo.
  • Architect and implement scalable and robust ML pipelines for training, evaluating, and deploying large-scale generative models into our simulation infrastructure, including techniques like model distillation and quantization.
  • Build and scale production-ready video generation techniques (e.g., Diffusion, Flow Matching) to create dynamic and interactive simulation environments.
  • Apply Vision Language Models (VLMs) to enhance the semantic understanding and controllability of our world simulation products.
  • Partner with world class research teams across Waymo and Alphabet to leverage State-of-The-Art research in 4D world modeling and generative AI into robust, production-ready solutions.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to other engineers on the team.

You have:

  • MS or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in ML engineering and applied Deep Learning, with a strong portfolio of shipped products or publication record.
  • Proven experience in developing and training large-scale generative models for video generation (e.g., Diffusion models, Flow Matching) or Vision Language Models (VLMs) and their applications.
  • Deep expertise in 3D World Modeling or 3D computer vision.
  • Familiarity with 3D reconstruction and rendering techniques (e.g., 3D Gaussian Splatting).
  • Strong programming skills in Python and experience with ML frameworks such as Jax/Flax, PyTorch or Tensorflow.

We prefer:

  • PhD and a strong track record of delivering impactful ML products in 3D generative models, world models, or video generation..
  • Experience in simulating sensor data (Camera, Lidar, Radar) and/or semantic scenes.
  • Experience with autonomous systems, robotics, or autonomous vehicle simulation.
  • Experience in training and optimizing large scale models on GPU/TPU clusters for efficient serving.
