3D Lab information

What is a 3D lab?

A 3D lab is a specialized facility equipped with advanced technology for creating, scanning, and printing three-dimensional objects. These labs typically support research, education, and product development by providing access to 3D printers, scanners, modeling software, and other prototyping tools. Users can design and fabricate prototypes, models, or components in various materials, making 3D labs valuable in fields like engineering, medicine, architecture, and art. The lab staff often assist with technical support, training, and project guidance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D lab technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Lab Technician, you need a solid background in 3D modeling, computer-aided design (CAD), and an understanding of digital fabrication processes, often supported by a relevant technical degree or certification. Familiarity with 3D printers, scanning equipment, and software such as Autodesk, SolidWorks, or Blender is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this role. These qualifications ensure precise project execution, innovative solutions, and efficient collaboration in a technology-driven environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in a 3D lab, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in a 3D lab often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex 3D printers, managing tight project deadlines, and ensuring consistent print quality. Collaboration with designers and engineers is essential to resolve design-for-manufacturability issues and optimize prototypes. To address these challenges, it's important to stay updated on the latest 3D printing technologies, maintain organized workflows, and communicate proactively with team members to anticipate and resolve technical or logistical obstacles.

What is the difference between 3D Lab vs 3D Modeler?

Aspect3D Lab
Required CredentialsTypically a degree or certification in 3D design, animation, or related fields
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, studios, or facilities with specialized equipment for 3D printing, scanning, or prototyping
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by research institutions, manufacturing, and entertainment industries for development and testing

While a 3D Lab refers to a physical space or facility focused on 3D technology and prototyping, a 3D Modeler is a professional who creates digital 3D models. The lab provides the environment and tools, whereas the modeler produces the digital assets used in various projects. Both roles are interconnected but serve different functions within the 3D industry.

How to become a 3D Lab technologist?

To become a 3D Lab technologist, candidates typically need a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as biomedical engineering, computer science, or medical technology. Skills in 3D modeling, imaging software, and familiarity with laboratory equipment are essential, along with certifications in medical imaging or laboratory procedures being advantageous.

Whether you are a professional looking for a career change, an undergraduate student exploring your first opportunity, or recent graduate with an advanced degree, we have opportunities that will allow you to innovate, be challenged and make an impact. Join our team and start your journey today!

If you are a Mechanical Engineering professional looking for an opportunity to apply the fundamentals of engineering to real-world product challenges, Copeland has an exciting opportunity for you.
As a member of the Applied Mechanics Lab team, you will support engineering testing, product development, supplier qualification, and failure analysis activities across Copeland's HVACR product portfolio. This role offers a unique combination of hands-on laboratory work, engineering analysis, design, testing, and problem-solving.
You will work alongside a highly experienced team of engineers and technicians, gaining exposure to a wide variety of mechanical engineering disciplines including structural analysis, testing, instrumentation, machine design, durability, vibration, fatigue, and data analysis.
This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer who enjoys understanding how things work, solving technical problems, and applying engineering fundamentals to real-world products.
AS A MECHANICAL ENGINEER - APPLIED MECHANICS LAB, YOU WILL:
  • Support engineering projects related to product development, supplier qualification, and customer failure analysis.
  • Plan and execute laboratory testing on mechanical components and systems.
  • Design and develop test fixtures and experimental setups.
  • Analyze engineering test data and provide technical conclusions and recommendations.
  • Apply mechanical engineering principles to investigate product performance and durability issues.
  • Collaborate with engineers, lab technicians, and internal customers to define project objectives and testing requirements.
  • Prepare technical reports and present findings to engineering stakeholders.
  • Support continuous improvement of testing methods, procedures, and laboratory capabilities.
  • Develop expertise in durability, vibration, fatigue, materials behavior, and mechanical system performance.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 0-2 years of engineering experience, including internships or co-op experience.
  • Strong CAD experience using NX, SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, or similar 3D modeling software.
  • Working knowledge of Strength of Materials / Mechanics of Materials principles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interpret engineering test results and technical data.
  • Excellent organizational skills and willingness to learn in a collaborative team environment.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States. Sponsorship will not be provided for this position.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Internship, co-op, or professional experience in mechanical testing, product development, engineering labs, manufacturing, or design engineering.
  • Experience with laboratory testing, instrumentation, data acquisition systems, or experimental analysis.
  • Exposure to fatigue, vibration, durability, failure analysis, or structural mechanics.
  • Experience with engineering analysis tools such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python, Minitab, or similar software.
  • Experience performing engineering calculations related to stress, strain, strength, or mechanical performance.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis and technical report writing.
  • Exposure to finite element analysis (FEA).
WHY JOIN THE APPLIED MECHANICS LAB?
  • Work on a wide variety of engineering challenges rather than focusing on a single product or specialty.
  • Gain hands-on experience in testing, design, analysis, and problem solving.
  • Learn directly from highly experienced mechanical engineers and technical experts.
  • Apply the mechanical engineering concepts learned in school to real-world products and systems.
  • Develop technical depth while exploring multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Enjoy a team environment that supports growth, learning, and technical development.
