What is a 3D Lab Tech?

3D Lab Techs, or 3D Laboratory Technicians, are professionals who operate and maintain 3D printing equipment and related technology in laboratory settings. They are responsible for preparing digital files, setting up print jobs, monitoring the printing process, and performing post-processing on printed objects. Their work supports research, product development, prototyping, and manufacturing by creating accurate physical models from digital designs. 3D Lab Techs often collaborate with engineers, designers, and scientists to ensure high-quality results and efficient workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D Lab Tech?

To thrive as a 3D Lab Tech, you need a solid understanding of 3D modeling, fabrication processes, and familiarity with CAD software, usually supported by a technical degree or relevant experience. Proficiency with 3D printers, scanners, and software like SolidWorks or AutoCAD, as well as basic troubleshooting skills, is commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are important soft skills in this role. These skills ensure precise production, efficient workflow, and collaboration within multidisciplinary teams in design and manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by 3D Lab Techs when managing multiple print jobs simultaneously?

3D Lab Techs often juggle several print jobs at once, which can be challenging due to varying print times, machine maintenance, and the need for precise calibration. Busek is a leader in developing advanced spacecraft propulsion and related technologies. Our systems are flying on NASA, DoD, and commercial missions. We’re passionate about innovation and dedicated to pushing the boundaries of in-space mobility.
Summary:
Busek is seeking a hands-on and detail-oriented Vibration Test Engineer to support environmental testing of flight and development hardware. This role is critical in ensuring that our propulsion systems and components can withstand the mechanical stresses of launch and space operations. You will be responsible for test planning, fixture design, test execution, and data analysis in support of product qualification and acceptance.
How you will make an impact:
  • Develop test plans and procedures for sine, random, and shock vibration tests in accordance with customer and industry specifications (NASA, MIL-STD, etc.).
  • Design and fabricate test fixtures for structural integrity and modal compatibility.
  • Set up and operate electrodynamic shakers and data acquisition systems.
  • Coordinate with engineering teams to define test requirements and interpret results.
  • Analyze test data and generate detailed reports documenting test setup, procedures, and results.
  • Maintain and calibrate vibration test equipment.
  • Support root cause analysis for any test anomalies or failures.
  • Contribute to the continual improvement of environmental testing processes and infrastructure.
Desired skills:
  • Hands-on experience with vibration testing (shaker systems, fixturing, instrumentation).
  • Familiarity with environmental test standards (NASA GEVS, MIL-STD-810, etc.).
  • Experience with accelerometers, modal analysis, and data acquisition software (e.g., VibrationVIEW, m+p, LMS, etc.).
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, including fixture design and machine shop interface.
  • Excellent technical communication and documentation skills.
Nice to have:
  • Experience working in the aerospace or defense industry.
  • Familiarity with thermal-vacuum or shock testing.
  • SolidWorks or other 3D CAD experience.
  • LabView or Python scripting for automation or data analysis.
The expected salary range for this position is $80,000 - $110,000.  Actual compensation will be determined by the candidate’s experience, education, and alignment with organizational needs.
Benefits:
  • Competitive salary
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Flexible work hours and generous PTO
  • Life insurance and disability coverage
  • Paid holidays
  • Opportunities for career growth and professional development
  • Collaborative and innovative work environment
