Job description

The Mechanical Designer / Fire Truck Body Engineer will utilize advanced CAD design and drafting skills to engineer, develop, verify, and document custom fire apparatus, truck bodies, and fabricated assemblies, ensuring accurate, manufacturable designs that meet customer specifications and industry standards.

Responsibilities:

• Meet customer and company quality standards for fabrication as directed.

• Design and engineer custom fire truck bodies, compartments, mounting systems, equipment storage solutions, and apparatus components.

• Develop complete manufacturing drawings, bills of materials, and assembly documentation for production.

• Read and interpret customer specifications, engineering requirements, blueprints, and sketches.

• Produce detailed fabrication drawings including dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, welding requirements, and fastening methods.

• Create and modify 2D and 3D models using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.

• Design sheet metal, structural, and welded assemblies for manufacturability and efficient production.

• Coordinate with production personnel, welders, fabricators, and project managers to ensure designs are practical and cost-effective.

• Generate cut lists, flat patterns, assembly instructions, and manufacturing documentation.

• Inspect completed products and review fabrication quality to ensure compliance with engineering specifications.

• Report safety concerns, near misses, property damage, and injuries immediately.

• Work 40 hours per week, plus overtime as needed.

Required Technical Skills

• Minimum 5 years of CAD design and detailing experience.

• Experience designing fire apparatus, truck bodies, heavy equipment, custom vehicles, or similar fabricated products preferred.

• Sheet metal design expertise including bend allowances, K-factors, material thicknesses, and flat pattern development.

• Knowledge of aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel, and their fabrication characteristics.

• Advanced CAD software knowledge.

• Expertise in creating highly detailed technical drawings, including:
o Accurate dimensioning and annotations.
o Application of industry-specific symbols and conventions.
o Creation of assembly drawings and exploded views.
o Development of bills of materials and manufacturing documentation.

• Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals including:
o Structural design principles.
o Material selection and performance.
o Load analysis and component integration.

• Strong grasp of drafting principles including orthographic projections, section views, tolerancing, and scaling.

• Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, specifications, and customer requirements.

• Knowledge of ISO, ASME, and AWS drawing and fabrication standards.
