3D Computer Vision information

What is 3D computer vision?

3D computer vision is a field within computer science and artificial intelligence that focuses on enabling computers to interpret and understand visual information from the world in three dimensions. Unlike traditional 2D computer vision, which works with flat images, 3D computer vision uses data from sources like stereo cameras, LiDAR, or depth sensors to reconstruct and analyze the shape, size, and position of objects in a scene. This technology is crucial for applications such as autonomous vehicles, robotics, augmented reality, and medical imaging. By understanding the spatial relationships between objects, 3D computer vision systems can enable machines to interact more effectively with their environment.

What are some common challenges faced by 3D computer vision engineers during project development?

3D Computer Vision engineers often encounter challenges such as managing noisy or incomplete data from sensors, ensuring real-time processing speeds, and integrating algorithms with various hardware platforms. Additionally, adapting solutions to diverse environments—such as changing lighting conditions or object occlusions—requires robust model design and continual testing. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including hardware engineers and software developers, is key to overcoming these challenges and successfully deploying 3D vision applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3d computer vision engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Computer Vision Engineer, you need a solid background in computer vision, mathematics (especially linear algebra and geometry), and programming, often supported by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Proficiency in Python or C++, experience with libraries like OpenCV and PCL, and familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective teamwork help candidates excel in developing novel algorithms and collaborating across disciplines. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating innovative 3D perception systems that meet real-world challenges and drive advancements in areas like robotics, AR/VR, and autonomous vehicles.

CAD Engineer, Tech Transfer

CelLink Corporation

Georgetown, TX • On-site

Full-time

Job description

As a CAD Engineer, you will be crucial in supporting and improving the products that are already powering major electrification programs. Rather than starting from a blank sheet of paper, you'll work closely with engineering and manufacturing teams to optimize existing designs, improve manufacturability, and help bring innovative products to production at scale.
In addition to design support, you will play a key role in transferring new and existing products from development into manufacturing. This includes partnering with Product Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Operations teams to ensure designs are production-ready, technical documentation is complete and accurate, and engineering changes are successfully implemented during product launches and process transfers. The reality is that great products don't make it to production because of a single brilliant design. They make it because talented engineers continuously improve, refine, and optimize them as requirements evolve. That's where this role comes in.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings for wire harnesses, flexible circuits, and battery interconnect assemblies using established CAD standards and best practices
  • Support technology transfer and new product introduction (NPI) activities by transitioning designs from development into manufacturing environments
  • Modify and improve existing designs to support manufacturing, quality, and customer requirements
  • Collaborate with Design, Process, Manufacturing, and Product Engineering teams to implement engineering changes and manufacturability improvements
  • Add manufacturing features and design updates that improve production efficiency and product robustness
  • Support the release and revision of engineering components, assemblies, and documentation
  • Apply and maintain geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) practices in engineering drawings
  • Manage and distribute CAD data to internal stakeholders and cross-functional teams
  • Develop CAD best practices, standards, and training materials to support engineering consistency and efficiency
  • Contribute design support and technical expertise to future product development initiatives
  • Must be comfortable traveling ~25% of the time to our R&D site in Redwood City, CA

Educational Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, CAD Design, or a related technical field
  • 2+ years of CAD design experience, preferably supporting electrical, electromechanical, automotive, or manufacturing-related products
  • Experience managing large assemblies and complex 3D CAD models
  • Experience supporting product transfers, design transfers, new product introduction (NPI), or manufacturing launch activities preferred
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a desire to continuously learn and improve
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineering and manufacturing teams

Preferred Experience
  • SolidWorks experience
  • Experience supporting technology transfer, product transfer, NPI, or manufacturing ramp-up activities
  • Experience supporting manufacturing or production environments
  • Familiarity with engineering change management (ECN/ECO), product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, and release processes
  • Startup experience
  • Familiarity with wire harnesses, flexible circuits, battery systems, or electromechanical assemblies
