What is a 399 apprenticeship?

399 Apprenticeships refer to apprenticeship programs offered through IATSE Local 399, which is the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 399. These apprenticeships provide hands-on training and work experience for individuals pursuing careers in transportation and related crafts within the film, television, and entertainment industries. Participants learn essential skills such as equipment operation, safety protocols, and industry best practices, often while working alongside experienced professionals. The goal is to prepare apprentices for union membership and long-term employment in their chosen field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 399 apprentice?

To thrive as a 399 Apprentice (such as in the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 399, which represents workers in transportation and the motion picture industry), you generally need a high school diploma or GED, a commitment to learning, and physical stamina. Familiarity with industry-specific tools, vehicles, or equipment, and completion of OSHA or other safety certifications, are often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and reliability help apprentices stand out and successfully integrate into professional environments. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring safety, efficiency, and growth within hands-on, unionized trades.

What kind of mentorship and on-the-job training can I expect during a 399 apprenticeship?

During a 399 Apprenticeship, you can expect to work closely with experienced journeypersons who will provide hands-on guidance and supervision as you learn the trade. Training typically combines classroom instruction with real-world projects, allowing you to develop practical skills and industry knowledge. The collaborative environment encourages apprentices to ask questions, participate in team tasks, and gradually take on more responsibility as their abilities grow. This structure ensures you gain comprehensive experience while building strong professional relationships in your chosen field.
