Job description

UnityPoint Health is actively recruiting for an Emergency Medicine Physician to join our team in Central Iowa

Choose a career that matters at UnityPoint Health. We believe in a patient-centered vision, physician-driven philosophy, and one team approach which ensures every patient knows just how much they matter to this world. UnityPoint Health is one of the nations most integrated health systems and the nation’s fifth largest non-denominational health system with 33,000 team members. Commitment to our team has earned us a spot on the Top 150 Place to Work in Healthcare by Becker’s Healthcare for two consecutive years. Come be an essential part of our core purpose—to improve the health of the people and communities we serve.

The UnityPoint Health – Des Moines Department of Emergency Medicine is a community-based practice with an academic tilt. Employed physicians provide coverage at 4 unique Emergency Departments with a variety of hospitals and patient populations offering physicians the chance to experience exceptional variety in their practice. The group is looking for a physician interested in practicing clinically across all four of its Emergency Departments.

Three of these EDs are within the Des Moines, Iowa, metro area: Iowa Methodist Medical Center (IMMC), Iowa Lutheran Hospital (ILH), and Methodist West (MW) Hospital. About 50 minutes east of Des Moines is Grinnell Regional Medical center. This is the newest of the four emergency departments and rounds out our provider experience with a unique and challenging rural medicine experience serving patients in Poweshiek and surrounding counties. In addition to clinical shifts the group encourages and rewards participation in teaching, scholarly activity and non-clinical activities through appointments in graduate medical education and annual incentive programs.

Iowa Methodist Medical Center: A tertiary care facility with level 1 trauma center designation and primary stroke center certification. IMMC ED is an adult only emergency department built in 2016 with an annual census of ~45,000. During peak hours there is double and triple physician coverage with single APP coverage 24 hrs a day. Together, with experienced nursing staff, physicians provide care to a high acuity patient population with a full complement of subspeciality services available. Current residency training programs at IMMC include Internal Medicine, General Surgery, and Podiatry. Emergency Medicine residency was added in 2023 with the first class of residents to arrive in July 2024. Emergency Medicine residents will also rotate at ILH and Grinnell Emergency Departments.

Iowa Lutheran Hospital: A level IV trauma center serving East Des Moines and surrounding areas with availability of most medical and surgical subspecialties including a high functioning intensive care unit. ILH ED cares for all ages with an annual census of ~25,000. It is home to one of Iowa’s largest, private based mental health facilities with most of these patients presenting through the Emergency Department. ILH is also home to the East Des Moines Family Medicine residency program.

Methodist West Hospital:  Methodist West hospital is located in West Des Moines, Iowa and is a center of excellence for Orthopedic and Maternity services. The MW ED is a state-of-the-art ED (built in 2008) with an annual census of ~25,000. Although there are fewer subspecialty services offered at MW this is easily navigated because of the interconnectedness with both IMMC and ILH patients allowing patients to be easily admitted to either of those locations.

Grinnell Regional Medical Center: This high functioning critical access hospital is located ~50 minutes east of Des Moines and provides a unique and challenging rural medicine experience. It boasts 24/7 inpatient physician coverage for hospitalists and general surgery along with limited orthopedic, urology, ENT, and Ob/gyn coverage. This location allows EM physicians to exercise their emergency medicine expertise in its purest form.

  • Full-time Emergency Medicine opportunity serving the central Iowa region
  • Established team of experienced physicians and Advanced Practitioners
  • Advanced scheduling to accommodate work/life balance
  • Fully integrated system with clinics and hospitals on EPIC EMR to improve care coordination

  • 1560 hours per year
  • Provider will practice at all locations: Methodist, Lutheran, Methodist West & Grinnell
  • Shift duration varies by location: 12 hours, 9 hours & 8 hours
  • Explicit interest in educating EM residents
  • Expectation to be involved with non-clinical activities: education, scholarly activity and other non-clinical activities which advance departmental and organization goals.
  • Ability to work as a team member to improve the health of the people and communities we serve
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), analytical and problem-solving

  • Board Eligible or Board Certified in Emergency Medicine (ABEM or AOBEM)
  • Ability to obtain and hold an unrestricted license to practice in the state of Iowa
  • Hold current and unrestricted state and federal authority to prescribe and administer medications as necessary or appropriate to the physician’s field of practice
  • Eligible to work in the United States (H1-B cap exempt)

We Offer

  • Shift based compensation + RVU kicker + performance incentive
  • A competitive Total Rewards program offers benefits that align with your needs and priorities, no matter what stage of life you are in
  • Generous CME allowance, malpractice insurance with tail coverage, tax advantaged retirement accounts with a match, and more
  • Eligibility for Public Service Loan Forgiveness, including a free third-party service for loan restructuring and consolidation
  • A commitment to ensuring you have a voice that is heard regardless of role, race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation
  • Support and development opportunities that are a crucial part of delivering a remarkable employment experience
  • A culture guided by uncompromising values and unwavering belief in doing what’s right for the people we serve
