Chief Pilot

Department: Flight Operations
Reports To: Director of Operations
Location: Lodi, California
Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Summary

The Helicopter Chief Pilot is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight of all helicopter flight operations, including utility, external load, patrol, and project-based field operations. This position ensures full compliance with FAA Part 135 regulations while fostering a proactive safety culture and maintaining the highest standards of operational excellence and efficiency.

The Chief Pilot serves as the FAA-designated Chief Pilot and is responsible for operational control oversight in accordance with Part 135. This role includes supervising and developing pilots, managing flight schedules, coordinating with maintenance and ground operations teams, and supporting company growth through safe and efficient execution of flight operations.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Supervision

  • Lead and manage the pilot team, ensuring adherence to company policies, procedures, and FAA regulations.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to pilots.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee training programs for new and existing pilots.
  • Promote professional development and mentorship within the pilot group.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure all flight operations comply with FAA Part 135 regulations and company policies.
  • Serve as the FAA-designated Chief Pilot responsible for operational control oversight.
  • Stay current on aviation regulatory changes and implement necessary updates to company practices.
  • Prepare for and participate in FAA inspections, audits, and regulatory reviews.

Flight Operations Management

  • Oversee daily flight operations, including scheduling, dispatch, and crew assignments.
  • Ensure safe and efficient execution of all missions, addressing operational issues as they arise.
  • Coordinate with maintenance personnel to ensure aircraft are airworthy and available for scheduled operations.
  • Support operational planning for new contracts, projects, and mission profiles.

Safety and Quality Assurance

  • Promote and maintain a strong culture of safety within the flight operations team.
  • Conduct safety meetings and participate in safety audits and investigations.
  • Implement and monitor safety programs and initiatives.
  • Work in conjunction with the Safety Management System (SMS) Manager to manage and continuously improve the company's SMS program, including hazard reporting, risk assessments, corrective actions, and safety performance monitoring.
  • Lead operational risk assessments for new projects, customer contracts, and mission profiles.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of flight operations, pilot qualifications, and training.
  • Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory authorities and company leadership.
  • Ensure all operational documentation remains current and compliant with regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Aviation Management or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a helicopter pilot, with 3 years of the last 5 years within Part 135 operations.
  • Minimum 3,000 hours Helicopter Pilot in Command (PIC).
  • At least 2 years of experience in a supervisory or management role in aviation.

Licenses and Certifications

  • FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate with Rotorcraft-Helicopter rating.
  • FAA Instrument Rating.
  • FAA Part 135 Chief Pilot qualification and eligibility.
  • Current FAA First or Second Class Medical Certificate.
