What is a 1099 IT contractor?

A 1099 IT Contractor is a self-employed professional who provides IT services to clients on a contract basis. Instead of being a traditional employee, they operate as independent contractors and receive payments without taxes withheld. They are responsible for their own taxes, benefits, and business expenses. This role can include software development, cybersecurity, IT support, or consulting. Contracts may be short-term or long-term, depending on the client's needs.

What is the typical work arrangement and project structure for a 1099 IT contractor?

As a 1099 IT Contractor, you are usually engaged on a project-by-project basis, often working independently or as part of a cross-functional team for a set duration. Contracts may range from short-term troubleshooting assignments to long-term development projects, depending on client needs. You'll typically be responsible for managing your schedule, invoicing, and communicating progress with clients or project managers. This flexible structure allows for a variety of work environments—onsite, remote, or hybrid—enabling you to choose projects that best match your expertise and career goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the 1099 IT contractor position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 1099 IT Contractor, you need strong technical expertise in your specialty (such as software development, networking, or cybersecurity), usually backed by relevant education or significant hands-on experience. Familiarity with current industry tools, cloud platforms, and certifications like CompTIA, AWS, or Microsoft are often expected. Excellent self-management, communication, and problem-solving skills help contractors deliver results while working independently or with remote teams. These abilities are crucial for meeting client expectations, adapting to changing project requirements, and building a strong reputation in the contracting market.

Job description

We are seeking a detail-oriented and versatile IT Contractor to assist with a comprehensive systems cleanup and asset inventory project. This role is a unique blend of technical systems administration and hands-on operational support. You will spend your time ensuring our digital environment is secure and organized while collaborating directly with our Finance team to bridge the gap between IT assets and financial tracking.
Key Responsibilities
IT Systems & Security Cleanup
• Account Auditing: Review active and inactive user accounts across various platforms to ensure compliance with security policies.
• Permissions Review: Audit folder, software, and system-level permissions to ensure "least privilege" access.
• Server Support: Assist with basic server administration tasks as needed to support the inventory and cleanup process.
• Help Desk Support: Provide ad-hoc technical support to staff during the project duration to ensure smooth daily operations.
Inventory & Asset Management
• IT Asset Discovery: Conduct a full physical and digital inventory of hardware (workstations, servers, networking gear, and peripherals).
• Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Work closely with the Finance Team to reconcile IT records with financial asset logs.
• Physical Tagging: Lead the "stickering" process-applying physical asset tags to equipment and updating the tracking database.
• Data Integrity: Ensure all serial numbers, purchase dates, and user assignments are accurately captured and documented.
Qualifications
• Experience: Proven experience in a Help Desk or Desktop Support role.
• Technical Skills: Familiarity with Active Directory (for account/permission reviews) and basic Server Administration.
• Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy in data entry and record-keeping is a must.
• Logistics: Ability to move around an office environment and handle hardware (lifting up to 25 lbs) for tagging and inventory purposes.
• Soft Skills: Strong communication skills to effectively update both the IT Manager and the Finance Department on project milestones.
Why Join This Project?
This is an excellent opportunity for a mid-level IT professional looking to gain "under-the-hood" experience in IT governance and organizational operations. You will play a pivotal role in streamlining our infrastructure and ensuring our financial and technical records are perfectly synced. Equal Opportunity Employer / Disabled / Protected Veterans
