What We Look For In a Creative Writing Tutor
  • Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of fiction writing craft including plot structure, character development, dialogue, point of view, setting, and voice, plus poetry forms, creative nonfiction techniques, and genre conventions. Ability to explain narrative arc, showing versus telling, imagery, metaphor, and revision strategies while preparing students for creative writing portfolios, workshops, and publication opportunities.
  • Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching story development, scene construction, and revision techniques through writing workshops and critique methods. Guides students through developing compelling characters, constructing dialogue, building tension, experimenting with point of view, and writing across genres including fiction, poetry, memoir, and screenplay. Emphasizes finding authentic voice and connects creative writing to self-expression, empathy development, and literary tradition.
  • Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with creative writing curricula and common challenges such as overcoming writer block, developing distinctive voice, and accepting and applying constructive feedback. Adapts instruction using writing prompts, mentor text analysis, and workshop-style peer review to support students from young writers through adult learners developing creative expression across fiction, poetry, and nonfiction genres.
  • Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
  • Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
  • Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
