Position Summary
We are seeking a hardworking and safety-focused Field Inspector - Underground Fiber . This person will be responsible for on-site inspection and quality assurance of underground fiber optic construction projects in the Columbus, OH area. This role ensures all work complies with design specifications, safety regulations, and local, state, and federal standards.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform daily inspections of underground fiber installation, including trenching, boring, conduit placement, handholes, and fiber optic cable installation.
  • Ensure contractors follow project plans, specifications, safety protocols, and permit requirements.
  • Document field activities through detailed reports, photos, and inspection logs.
  • Identify and report deficiencies or deviations from plans and ensure timely correction.
  • Coordinate with project managers, contractors, engineers, and utility companies to resolve field issues.
  • Verify location of existing utilities using as-built plans and locate services.
  • Assist with pre-construction site walks and post-construction closeouts.
  • Monitor traffic control and site safety measures to ensure compliance.
  • Maintain accurate and organized records of inspections and communications.
  • Use GPS or GIS tools to capture field data when needed.

Qualifications and Skills
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical certification or associate degree in construction management, telecommunications, or a related field preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in underground utility or fiber construction inspection.
  • Strong knowledge of underground utility construction techniques (trenching, boring, directional drilling).
  • Familiarity with fiber optic network components and installation practices.
  • Working knowledge of local codes, OSHA safety regulations, and permitting requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, utility maps, and specifications.
  • Proficiency with computers and basic field technology (smartphone, GPS, inspection apps).
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation; willingness to travel locally.
