Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The SUE Utility Locator is responsible for identifying, locating, and mapping underground utilities to support surveying and construction projects. This role uses tools such as electromagnetic locators and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to accurately determine the position and depth of utilities like water, gas, electric, and telecommunications lines. The position works closely with project teams and external partners to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality project delivery.

We are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position. Applicants must already possess work authorization in the country the job is located.

What you will do:

  • Perform field investigations to locate underground utilities using electromagnetic locating equipment and GPR systems
  • Interpret data to determine utility type, depth, and alignment
  • Mark utilities on-site using industry-standard methods and practices
  • Document findings and maintain accurate records of utility locations and field activities
  • Conduct routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of locating equipment
  • Collaborate with project teams, contractors, and utility owners to verify and communicate findings
  • Support project planning and execution by providing accurate subsurface data
  • Maintain organized field notes, reports, and supporting documentation
  • Stay current on utility locating technology, tools, and industry best practices
  • Assist with training and mentoring less experienced team members
  • Follow safety procedures and quality standards at all times

What you will bring:

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Approximate travel will be 60% local and 40% out of state

REQUIRED EDUCATION: 

  • High school diploma or GED required.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:   

  • 3+ years of related experience in utility locating or similar field
  • 1+ year experience using electromagnetic locating equipment and GPR technology

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, OR TRAINING: (if applicable)

  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record required
  • OSHA certifications preferred (or ability to obtain)

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to read and interpret technical data and field information
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Basic computer skills for data entry, documentation, and communication
  • Ability to manage time effectively and handle multiple tasks in a field environment
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, often on uneven terrain
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching
  • Ability to frequently lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.)
  • Ability to safely operate field tools and equipment (shovels, measuring devices, etc.)
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
  • Ability to travel and work overtime as needed
