Job Title:Research Senior TechnicianDepartment:Arts and Sciences | Chemistry and Biochemistry Administration

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry within the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University seeks a Research Senior Technician to join our team. The Research Senior Technician provides advanced research support by independently conducting standard laboratory and field research activities and supporting broader research projects. This role collects and processes samples, conducts basic experiments, assists with the development and implementation of standard research protocols and project plans, and performs preliminary statistical analysis. The Research Senior Technician independently plans and prioritizes routine research assignments within established objectives and applies established procedures and precedent to resolve issues in routine work. The role may also provide guidance, assistance, and training to less experienced colleagues. This position will assist with work on organic and inorganic synthesis, such as study electrochemical oxidation and reduction of organic molecules in solid-state.

The Research Senior Technician supports research activities in the area of inorganic chemistry and may assist with the operation, setup, and maintenance of laboratory or field equipment and instrumentation. Responsibilities include managing and maintaining laboratory equipment, preparing and maintaining reagents and solutions, ordering and organizing supplies, and ensuring laboratory safety and compliance, including participation in safety inspections. The role includes consolidating and analyzing research results, evaluating the validity of experimental data, and summarizing findings for inclusion in research reports, grant proposals, presentations, and scientific manuscripts. The Research Senior Technician maintains accurate and detailed laboratory records, including experimental procedures and results, and supports preparation of progress reports.

The Research Senior Technician assists with the design and execution of standard research protocols and experiments. Depending on the research area, responsibilities may include activities such as sample preparation, molecular or cellular assays, protein or nucleic acid work, data processing, or other specialized laboratory or field techniques.

Additional responsibilities include supporting general laboratory operations, such as receiving and storing reagents and materials, maintaining instruments and equipment, organizing lab space and samples, and updating inventory or data tracking systems. The Research Senior Technician may also review relevant scientific literature to support research activities and contribute to team discussions, meetings, and collaborative efforts.

Minimum Education Required

Bachelor's degree in chemistry or equivalent experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Relevant experience as demonstrated by one of the following:
    • No prior experience required with a Bachelor's degree
    • Two (2) years of relevant experience with an Associate's degree
    • Four (4) years of relevant experience with a High School diploma
  • Broad knowledge of standard research processes, tools, and methodologies, typically gained through on-the-job experience, training, certification, or a degree.
  • Ability to independently complete routine research tasks.
  • Ability to anticipate, recognize, and resolve routine research-related issues using established procedures and precedent, with guidance from a supervisor when needed.
  • Ability to evaluate and select appropriate solutions for less frequent or unusual issues; escalates complex matters as appropriate.
  • Ability to assist with basic data analysis, research documentation, and preparation of reports or manuscripts.

The pay range for this job profile is $19.28 - $25.19. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, the unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
