Sr. SQL Developer / DBA
We are seeking an experienced Senior SQL Developer / DBA to design, build, optimize, and maintain the database systems that power our applications and client solutions. This long-term contract role is hybrid with a client located in the Columbus area and is available only for W-2 candidates; C2C, third parties, and visa sponsorship are not available. The ideal candidate brings deep Microsoft SQL Server expertise, strong data modeling skills, and the judgment to support reliable, high-quality data across development and production environments.
Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain SQL Server database schemas, including tables, views, stored procedures, functions, triggers, and indexes.
  • Diagnose and resolve query performance issues through execution plan analysis, indexing strategies, and query optimization.
  • Translate business requirements into normalized, scalable, and well-documented data models.
  • Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback on SQL code and database design.
  • Analyze and support data conversions, migrations, and data fixes while ensuring accuracy and integrity.
  • Collaborate with application developers and architects to ensure database designs align with application needs.
  • Maintain database security, backups, recovery processes, and overall database health and capacity.
  • Document data models, processes, and standards for the team.
  • Support production issue resolution and contribute to root-cause analysis when database issues arise.
Required Qualifications
  • 8+ years of hands-on experience as a SQL Developer, DBA, or in a combined role, primarily with Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Expert-level T-SQL skills, including complex queries, stored procedures, functions, and triggers.
  • Strong experience with query performance tuning, execution plan analysis, indexing strategy, and troubleshooting slow-running queries.
  • Solid data modeling skills with a deep understanding of normalization and relational design principles.
  • Experience with data conversions, ETL processes, and data cleanup or remediation work.
  • Familiarity with DBA responsibilities such as backups, restores, security, monitoring, and capacity planning.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to data accuracy and detail.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to translate between technical and business audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with SSIS, SSRS, or comparable ETL/reporting tools.
  • Exposure to cloud database platforms such as Azure SQL or AWS RDS.
  • Familiarity with source control tools such as Git and CI/CD practices for database changes.
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Work Environment
This is a long-term contract position with a hybrid schedule supporting a client in the Columbus area. The role requires someone who can work independently, collaborate well across technical and business teams, and bring a proactive mindset to database performance, reliability, and data quality.
