Makeshift Software Inc | Remote (3-6 months) - Hybrid On-Site | Full-Time

About Hexborn

Hexborn is our upcoming dark fantasy action RPG โ€” a brutal blend of hack-and-slash combat, deep dungeon crawling, guild progression, and player-driven rivalry set in a world consumed by an ever-expanding corruption known as the Graveglass Blight.
Players rise as an unknown mage into the leader of a legendary guild, mastering arcane combat, recruiting allies, forging relics, and descending into cursed ruins and large-scale raids to uncover the truth behind their rare ability to fly.

The demo is live now on Steam.

We're a small, focused team building something visually distinct โ€” moody, atmospheric, and combat-driven โ€” and the faster and smoother our own team can work, the faster that vision reaches players. We need an engineer who treats the rest of the dev team as their user, and internal tooling as a product in its own right.

The Role

We're looking for an experienced Senior Internal Tools Engineer to own developer workflow, runtime performance, and internal engine tooling for Hexborn. You'll build the custom editors, inspectors, and proprietary tools that let designers, artists, and engineers work faster and with fewer footguns โ€” and you'll dig into runtime performance issues that affect the whole team, not just a single system.

This is a handsโ€‘on, high-ownership role. You won't be handed a fixed spec โ€” you'll be identifying where the team is losing time or hitting friction, and building the tools and workflow improvements that fix it at the source.

What You'll Do
  • Refine and streamline developer workflow across the team, removing friction from day-to-day content creation and iteration
  • Investigate and resolve runtime performance issues that affect broad swaths of the game, not just isolated systems
  • Design and build internal engine tools that support designers, artists, and engineers working across Hexborn's systems
  • Build and maintain custom Inspector windows and proprietary editor tools tailored to our content pipelines
  • Identify recurring pain points across the team and turn them into reusable tooling rather than oneโ€‘off fixes
  • Collaborate closely with every discipline on the team โ€” engineering, art, design, and production โ€” to understand where tooling investment will have the most impact
  • Help establish and maintain internal tooling standards and conventions as the team and codebase scale
What You'll Need
  • Proven professional experience in Unity, with strong familiarity with the Editor scripting API
  • Demonstrated experience building custom Inspectors, editor windows, and internal tools
  • Strong background in runtime performance profiling and optimization
  • Solid grasp of Unity's Entity Component System (ECS), Burst, and Jobs System
  • A track record of identifying workflow friction and turning it into shipped tooling, not just documentation
  • Strong C# fundamentals and comfort working across engine-level and gameplay-adjacent code
  • Comfort working independently in a small, fastโ€‘moving team where you'll own your domain end-to-end
Perks & Tools
  • MOVE AI markerless + Z Cam E2-M4(s) motion capture system
  • Faceware Mark IV mocap helmets for facial performance capture
  • Industryโ€‘grade workstation, built to spec: see our standard build
  • Remoteโ€‘first for the first 3โ€‘6 months, transitioning to hybrid onโ€‘site thereafter
Work Arrangement

We'll start fully remote for a 3โ€‘6 month grace period while you ramp up and get embedded with the team, then transition to a hybrid onโ€‘site schedule.

Makeshift Software Inc. is the developer and publisher of Hexborn.
