What We Look For In a ACT Reading Tutor
  • Advanced Reading Comprehension Mastery: Deep knowledge of ACT Reading passages (prose fiction, social science, humanities, natural science) and question types (main idea, detail, inference, vocabulary in context, author's purpose). Ability to explain active reading strategies, annotation techniques, and evidence location for 40 questions in 35 minutes with strong time pressure.
  • Strategic Passage Navigation & Analysis: Skilled at teaching passage prioritization (starting with easiest), skimming techniques, and paragraph function identification. Guides students through comparative passages, implicit versus explicit information, and eliminating answer choices. Emphasizes efficient reading without over-analyzing and matching answers to textual evidence under strict time constraints.
  • Test Strategy & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with ACT Reading time challenges, common struggles with fiction versus science passages, and inference questions. Adapts instruction using timed passage practice, question type drills, and pacing strategies (roughly 9 minutes per passage). Requires minimum ACT Reading score of 31 and techniques for significant speed and accuracy improvements.
  • Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
  • Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
  • Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
