Job description

A Metallographer is responsible for preparing, examining, and analyzing metal and alloy samples to evaluate their microstructure, composition, and physical properties. This role supports quality control, failure analysis, research and development, and process improvement by providing detailed insights into material performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare metallographic samples using cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching techniques.
  • Perform microscopic examinations to analyze microstructures.
  • Interpret metallographic data to assess material quality, defects, and compliance with specifications.
  • Document findings and prepare inspection reports for engineering and quality teams.
  • Support failure analysis investigations by determining root causes of material defects or component failures.
  • Work closely with manufacturing and engineering teams to improve processes and material performance.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure proper lab practices.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., ASTM, ISO, AMS).
  • Maintain accurate records of testing procedures and results.


Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, or related experience.
  • Hands-on experience in metallographic sample preparation and analysis.
  • Knowledge of metallurgical principles.
  • Familiarity with microscopy techniques.
  • Ability to interpret technical standards and specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, or metals environment.
  • Certification in metallography or materials testing (e.g., ASM or ASNT).
  • Knowledge of failure analysis methodologies.


Physical Requirements
Should be comfortable standing for extended periods, lifting up to 50 lbs, and using PPE when working around certain chemicals.
