Job description

Investment Director — Strategic Capital

About the Role

As a member of Nationwide's Ventures team, you will help grow our portfolio of early‑to‑late stage companies shaping the future of insurance and financial services. You will evaluate, source, and invest in companies that deliver venture‑quality returns and strategic importance to Nationwide.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the investment team to identify and evaluate high‑potential companies, general partners, and strategies that align with Nationwide’s strategic priorities.
  • Lead or co‑lead the third‑party LP investment program: strategy, portfolio construction, fund sourcing, due diligence, GP selection, commitment sizing, and ongoing manager monitoring across stages and themes.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with LPs and GPs, negotiating LP agreements, side letters, advisory board seats, information rights, and co‑investment economics.
  • Serve as a thematic intelligence engine, translating portfolio signals into market maps, deal referrals, and early signals for the direct team.
  • Perform in‑depth industry examinations, build financial models, and produce research, white papers, and executive summaries to support investment decisions.
  • Support portfolio companies, including shepherding partnerships, pilots, and reporting processes, and engage with internal business units to promote initiatives.
  • Assist in developing Nationwide Ventures investment strategy, day‑to‑day operations, and reporting requirements.
  • Engage external partners such as venture capital firms, participate in conferences, and promote Nationwide Ventures within the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Qualifications
  • 2–5 years of experience in capital allocation, fund selection, or a related field (venture capital, private equity, investment banking, consulting).
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, business, or a related discipline (Master’s preferred).
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills; proficiency in financial modeling, cash‑flow and valuation analysis.
  • Experience conducting due diligence on early‑stage companies and producing investment memoranda.
  • Deep understanding of venture‑capital evaluation processes and portfolio management.
  • Knowledge of financial services, banking, or insurance industries is a plus.
  • Excellent strategic‑thinking, business judgment, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, prioritizing under fast‑paced conditions.
  • Interest in emerging technologies, markets, and new business models.
Location & Work Schedule

Full‑time position based in Columbus, Ohio (One Nationwide Plaza). Requires 2–3 days in office per week; remaining days remote. Candidates must reside within 35 miles of the office.
