NiSource Internship Program Introduction

NiSource is currently seeking a Summer Aviation Intern. Successful applicants will become integral members of the department while learning within a team environment, completing meaningful tasks and collaborating with team members and leaders on important projects. This position will be a great opportunity for the candidate desiring to launch their career in this field. Successful applicants will build professional relationships with other interns and all levels of NiSource personnel while participating in rewarding professional development exercises and fun, team-building activities. Interns will obtain a broad overview of NiSource's operations and current events in the utilities industry.

This is a 12-week summer internship program starting in May 2027, for students entering their junior or senior year in fall 2027. The role is based in Columbus, OH or Valparaiso, IN. Candidates must reside within 50 miles of the reporting location to be eligible.

The Aviation Intern will support the planning, development, and execution of operational initiatives within the Flight Department, with a focus on unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). This internship offers hands-on experience in aviation operations, data analysis, regulatory compliance, and safety management. The Aviation Intern will receive mentorship from experienced aviation professionals and exposure to real-world utility aviation operations and technologies. Key developments for the intern will include:

• Assist in the planning and coordination of UAS operations and flight schedules
• May act as Remote Pilot in Command of select UAS missions
• Support data collection and reporting for operational performance, safety metrics, and compliance tracking
• Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and scheduling teams to ensure operational readiness.
• Contribute to the development of project execution schedules and crew briefings
• Provide administrative support for meetings and document preparation
• Engage in safety management system activities and risk assessments

This position follows a hybrid schedule, requiring on-site presence three days per week and remote work two days per week.

Required Qualifications for Position

• Must be a rising junior or senior pursuing a degree in Aviation, UAS Operations, or related field
• FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate
• Authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications for Position

• Prior experience with UAS-related projects
• Private Pilot License

As a public utility, NiSource provides essential services to customers 24/7. Emergency needs can arise at various times throughout the year, including during storm season. Employees may be required to support emergency response efforts, which could include working outside normal hours or assisting with tasks outside of typical responsibilities.
