Job description

About the Role:

The Laborer - Coater supports the installation, maintenance, and replacement of steel natural gas pipelines by performing manual labor and applying protective coatings to steel pipe and fittings. This role ensures pipe integrity by preparing surfaces, applying appropriate coatings, and assisting the crew in daily construction and excavation activities under the supervision of the Crew Foreman.

ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Prepare steel pipe surfaces for coating through cleaning, scraping, grinding, or blasting as required.
  • Apply protective coatings (e.g., epoxy, tape wrap, shrink sleeves) to field joints, welds, and fittings according to industry and manufacturer standards.
  • Ensure coating quality by inspecting and performing holiday testing to detect flaws or holidays in the coating.
  • Assist with pipe laying, aligning, backfilling, and trenching operations.
  • Operate hand and power tools (grinders, wire brushes, torches, etc.) safely and effectively.
  • Support excavation, site prep, and clean-up tasks as directed.
  • Follow safety protocols and wear all required PPE, including flame-resistant clothing.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and report issues or hazards to supervision.
  • Travel to and from job sites, potentially working long hours, weekends, or in inclement weather.
  • Additional duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Five (5) years of general labor experience in construction, utility, or pipeline environments.
  • Familiarity with coating systems and surface preparation tools.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding work.
  • Basic knowledge of safety protocols in gas utility or pipeline construction.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to solve conflict, create team atmosphere, dependable, and demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Endurance to perform physical tasks throughout the workday, including bending, stooping, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience applying field coatings to steel pipe in gas distribution or transmission work.
  • OQ (Operator Qualification) certifications related to coating, pipe installation, or gas work.
  • Confined space and trench safety training.
