Job description

We are looking for a Patient Representative to join our collaborative team at Memorial Health!

What you'll do: 

  • Performs registration for the following areas in the respective Medical Office Buildings (MOB):
    • City Gate MOB: Urgent Care
    • Jerome MOB: Central Registration 1st and 2nd floors), Urgent Care
    • Urbana MOB: Central Registration (1st floor), Urgent Care
  • Conducts interviews with patients on the telephone and/or in person to gather pertinent registration information including demographic, financial and guarantor information, travel screenings, MyChart activation and simultaneously inputs information into the Hospital Information System (HIS) during the patient interview.
  • Contributes to the financial effectiveness of the Hospital by obtaining and/or reviewing scanned Medicare, Medicaid, and third-party insurance cards along with patient or patient representative photo identification.
  • Identifies patient’s veteran status and documents in the demographics. Inquires with patients about their intention to bill the Department of Veteran Affairs. For non-scheduled Emergency Department / Urgent Care / Admitted patient services, notifies the pre-cert specialist of the intent to bill VA. For scheduled services: ensures proper VA authorization is on file for scheduled procedure.
  • Identifies accident-related encounters and corrects details of the claim, guarantor, and coverage.
  • Secures patient or patient representative signatures on required forms including consent to treat, financial policy, patient rights and responsibilities, HIPAA notice of privacy practices, Provider Based Billing Acknowledgement, Notice of Non-Coverage and notice of non-discrimination.
  • Provides appropriate forms to patients as it relates to their care; Animal Bite Forms, First Report of Injury (FROI), etc.
  • Completes verification of patient insurance plan eligibility and benefits utilizing the Hospital based eligibility system and/or web-based technologies.
  • Verifies that prior authorization/precertification is secured for required outpatient testing and procedures, documents as appropriate within the EMR.
  • Completes as needed, medical necessity verification for Medicare outpatient tests and services that have Local Medical Review Policies (LMRP) / Local Coverage Determinations (LCD) in place and requests additional information from physician offices if needed to ensure compliance; presents the patient with an Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN) if needed for a non-compliant diagnosis.
  • Correctly identifies patients with verification of three primary identifiers. Avoids duplicate medical records (DMR) creation and reports duplicate MRNs when discovered.
  • Notifies clinical departments of patient arrivals and delays.

 Requirements 

Completion of High school diploma or equivalent; personal computer/data entry experience preferred; six months working in the healthcare environment preferred; experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook preferred; strong telephone and interpersonal communication skills; teambuilding skills; Knowledge of medical terminology and medical insurance preferred; excellent customer service skills.

Attains American Heart Association’s BLS certification within first sixty (60) days of employment, maintains continuous certification.  Attends Behavioral Health De-escalation Training Class (within six months of hire)
