What We Look For In a High School Computer Science Tutor
  • Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of computational thinking, programming fundamentals in Python or Java, data types, control structures, functions, arrays, basic algorithms, debugging, and introductory concepts in cybersecurity and data. Ability to explain algorithm efficiency, Boolean logic, and binary representation while preparing students for AP Computer Science courses, college computer science, and technology careers.

  • Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with high school computer science standards including CSTA frameworks and common challenges such as abstract thinking about algorithms, debugging syntax and logic errors, and building persistence through coding challenges. Adapts instruction using visual programming tools, interactive coding platforms, and engaging projects to support students from introductory exploring computer science through pre-AP preparation.
  • Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
  • Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
  • Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
