Maintenance Foreperson / Forewoman

Job Summary

The Maintenance Foreperson / Forewoman is responsible for overseeing the complete care and maintenance of assigned commercial landscape properties while leading and supporting a landscape maintenance crew. This hands-on leadership role requires exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

The Foreperson ensures that all landscape maintenance services are performed safely, efficiently, and according to company and client standards. This position serves as the primary field leader, maintaining quality control, managing daily crew activities, and fostering positive client relationships.

Key Responsibilities

Crew Leadership & Supervision

• Lead, train, and motivate landscape maintenance crew members.
• Assign daily work tasks and ensure projects are completed efficiently and on schedule.
• Monitor crew performance and provide coaching, guidance, and support as needed.
• Promote a positive team culture focused on safety, quality, and professionalism.
• Assist with onboarding and training of new employees.
• Ensure compliance with all company policies, procedures, and safety standards.

Site Maintenance & Care

• Perform and supervise all daily landscape maintenance activities, including: 
  • Mowing
  • Edging
  • String trimming
  • Pruning
  • Weeding
  • Mulching
  • Seasonal clean-ups
  • Debris removal
• Monitor plant health, turf conditions, and landscape appearance, reporting concerns promptly.
• Apply mulch, fertilizers, and other approved landscaping materials as directed.
• Perform minor irrigation inspections and adjustments; report major irrigation issues to management or irrigation technicians.
• Ensure all properties consistently meet company and client quality standards.

Client Relations & Quality Control

• Serve as the primary on-site representative of the company and maintain professional client interactions.
• Conduct regular property inspections to identify maintenance needs, safety concerns, and enhancement opportunities.
• Communicate effectively with Account Managers regarding client requests, site conditions, weather delays, and service recommendations.
• Address client concerns professionally and promptly.
• Ensure properties maintain a clean, attractive, and professional appearance always.

Equipment & Safety

• Safely operate and maintain landscape maintenance equipment, including: 
  • Commercial mowers
  • String trimmers
  • Edgers
  • Backpack blowers
  • Hedge trimmers
  • Utility vehicles
• Conduct daily pre-trip and equipment inspections.
• Ensure equipment is clean, properly maintained, and operating safely.
• Report equipment repairs, damage, or maintenance needs immediately.
• Enforce all company safety policies and OSHA-related requirements.
• Report accidents, incidents, and hazards promptly.

Reporting & Documentation

• Track daily work performed and materials utilized.
• Complete timesheets, work orders, inspections, and required reports accurately.
• Utilize mobile applications, GPS systems, and company software as required.
• Maintain regular communication with supervisors regarding site updates, crew performance, and customer feedback.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2–5 years of commercial landscape maintenance experience.
• Previous crew leadership, foreperson, or supervisory experience preferred.
• Strong knowledge of landscape maintenance practices and horticulture.
• Ability to operate commercial landscaping equipment safely and efficiently.
• Excellent time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and lead a team with minimal supervision.
• Professional communication and customer service skills.
• Experience with irrigation troubleshooting preferred.
• Pesticide Applicator License is a plus.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required.

Work Environment

• Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions include heat, cold, rain, snow, humidity, and varying temperatures.
• Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, dust, debris, fumes, and airborne particles.
• Occasional exposure to vibration, chemicals, and electrical hazards.
• Work is performed primarily outdoors at commercial properties.
• Noise levels are often loud due to equipment operation.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing 50 pounds or more.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, stoop, and reach for extended periods.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work throughout the workday.
• Ability to safely operate landscaping equipment and vehicles.
• Frequent use of hands, arms, and repetitive motions.
• Frequent verbal communication with crew members, supervisors, and clients.
• Ability to work outdoors in dusty, muddy, wet, and varying weather conditions.

Schedule

• Full-time position.
• Availability to work overtime, weekends, and during inclement weather as business needs require.
• Seasonal demands may require extended work hours.
