Job description

Cox Paving is seeking a skilled and motivated Construction Diesel Technician to join our team. In this role, you will perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a wide variety of construction equipment, both in the shop and out in the field.

Construction Diesel Technician Responsibilities:

1. Mechanical Diagnostics & Repair:

  • Troubleshoot and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and transmissions.
  • Use diagnostic tools and software to identify mechanical issues and make data-driven repairs.


2. Preventive Maintenance:

  • Perform scheduled PMs on construction equipment and fleet vehicles to prevent breakdowns and extend equipment life.
  • Conduct inspections of tires, fluid levels, filters, and wear components using checklists and OEM guidelines.


3. Field Service & Emergency Repairs:

  • Respond to equipment breakdowns on job sites and perform field-based repairs quickly and safely.
  • Communicate with operators and supervisors to assess issues and determine repair priorities.


4. Equipment Variety & Versatility:

  • Maintain and repair a wide range of equipment including:
  • Excavators, dozers, loaders, pavers, rollers, dump trucks, trailers, and company trucks.
  • Flex between shop work and field support based on operational needs.


5. Documentation & Safety Compliance:

  • Accurately record maintenance activities, inspections, and parts used in service software or paper logs.
  • Follow safety protocols, PPE requirements, and company policies at all times.
  • Support DOT and OSHA compliance through proper recordkeeping and safe practices.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience as a diesel technician, preferably in a construction or heavy equipment setting.
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical training or certifications in diesel or heavy equipment repair preferred.
  • Valid driver's license; ability to obtain DOT Medical Card (CDL a plus).
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and mobile equipment diagnostics.
  • Ability to weld, fabricate, or perform basic fabrication repairs is a plus.
  • Must be dependable, safety-focused, and capable of working independently or with a team.
