Summary:
The Assistant Vice President (AVP), Commercial Credit is responsible for leading and overseeing commercial credit underwriting activities and credit quality governance. This role manages the Commercial Underwriting team, ensuring sound credit decisioning, consistent credit risk assessment, and alignment with the credit union's strategic objectives and risk appetite.
The AVP plays a key leadership role in maintaining underwriting quality, ensuring regulatory compliance, supporting prudent loan growth, and fostering strong partnerships with lending teams.

Key Responsibilities:
Leadership amp; Strategy
  • Lead, coach, and develop the Commercial Underwriting team
  • Establish department goals aligned with Telhio’s strategic plan and risk tolerance
  • Promote a culture of credit discipline, accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Partner with senior leadership on credit strategy and commercial lending initiatives
  • Recommend and implement enhancements to credit policies, procedures, and risk frameworks
  • Ensure transparency and proactive communication across teams
Credit Underwriting Oversight
  • Oversee underwriting of commercial loans including:
    • Commercial Real Estate (CRE)
    • Commercial amp; Industrial (C amp;I)
    • Lines of Credit
    • SBA/Government-Guaranteed Loans
  • Ensure credit decisions reflect strong analytical rigor and adherence to policy
  • Review and approve complex or high-risk credit transactions within delegated authority
  • Provide guidance on structuring, risk mitigation, and exception management
  • Ensure consistent application of risk rating methodologies
Credit Analysis amp; Financial Oversight
  • Ensure high-quality financial analysis across teams, including:
    • Cash flow analysis (traditional business cash flow, global cash flow, and occasionally UCA cash flow as needed)
    • Financial statement spreading
    • Tax return analysis
    • Collateral valuation
  • Oversee capitalization rate analysis and loan exposure assessments
  • Ensure borrower repayment capacity is accurately assessed and documented
  • Maintain consistent underwriting standards and documentation quality across the department.
Risk Management amp; Compliance
  • Maintain compliance with all regulatory requirements and internal credit policies
  • Monitor exception reports and ensure adherence to target thresholds
  • Stay current on industry trends, market conditions, and regulatory changes impacting credit risk
  • Support internal and external examinations, audits, and regulatory reviews involving commercial credit activities.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, Business/Administration, Management, Statistics. (required)
  • Advanced degree and/or formal credit training (preferred)
Experience:
  • 7-10+ years of experience in commercial credit, underwriting, and/or portfolio management (required)
  • 3-5+ years of leadership experience managing credit, underwriting, or risk teams (preferred)
  • Experience with SBA or government-guaranteed lending programs (preferred)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of SBA Standard Operating Procedure
  • Knowledge of SBA Loan Products
  • Knowledge of Abrigo Sageworks (preferred)
Skills and Abilities:
  • Advanced analytical and credit risk assessment skills
  • Strong leadership and team development capabilities
  • Expertise in financial statement analysis and cash flow modeling
  • Deep understanding of commercial credit policy, loan structures, and documentation
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to evaluate complex credit relationships and make sound credit recommendations.
  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills with the ability to balance growth objectives and risk management principles.
