Job description

What you will do

As a Controls Project Manager for our HVAC division, you will work under general direction and serve as the on‑site project leader to plan, execute, and complete control systems projects for assigned customers.

  • Plan, design, program, and install HVAC control systems, including hardware design and system programming.
  • Coordinate installation activities, panel and field device placement, and system commissioning.
  • Provide work direction to subcontractors, electrical installers, technicians, designers, and administrative staff.
  • Maintain project financial results—costs, billings, collections, and profitability—while balancing customer satisfaction.
  • Communicate with the customer throughout all project phases and actively pursue change orders for additional work.
  • Ensure compliance with state, local, and federal legal requirements and uphold the highest ethics.
  • Document project recommendations, as-built drawings, commissioning data, and warranty information.
  • Deliver training to owner/operator on system operation and provide detailed manuals.
  • Coach and mentor technicians, installers, designers, and subcontractors.
  • Select, order, and schedule procurement of materials and subcontractor services, securing pricing and availability.
  • Handle billing and collections, ensuring accurate and timely invoices and subcontractor payments.
How you will do it
  • Complete hardware design and software programming following established standards.
  • Validate system functionality and resolve issues with subcontractors to ensure proper operation.
  • Provide accurate as-built and commissioning documentation.
  • Evaluate contractual scope and the impact of client‑issued bulletins or field directives.
  • Communicate technical and business issues with clients, actively pursuing change orders.
  • Lead installation, device verification, and commissioning of all system controllers.
  • Coordinate panel and field device locations, ensuring compliance with Johnson Controls literature and project requirements.
  • Report project status and provide monthly forecasts of revenue, costs, and gross margin to management.
  • Develop project plans and coordinate resources for cost‑effective installation.
  • Conduct site‑specific training and supply operation documentation.
  • Send warranty letters to customers upon project completion and ensure proper warranty execution.
  • Communicate design and operation details to customers, Johnson Controls staff, and subcontractors.
  • Ensure all delegated tasks are completed accurately, on time, billed, within budget and scope.
  • Maintain long‑term relationships with contractors, clients, consultants, and subcontractors.
  • Attend job progress meetings as required.
  • Adhere to Johnson Controls safety standards and ensure subcontractors do the same.
  • Manage procurement of materials, vendors, and subcontractors, including bidding processes.
  • Process costs, billings, and collections; maintain profitability and positive cash flow.
  • Handle subcontractor payment and billing processes.

Compensation and Incentives

Hiring salary range: $85,200–$117,000. A competitive bonus plan is based on individual, group, and corporate performance.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of an associate’s degree with four years of field experience or six years of equivalent experience in the HVAC/Building Automation industry.
  • Hands‑on experience in systems design and commissioning of digital HVAC/building automation controls systems.
  • Strong customer communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to explain technical material to non‑technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Computer proficiency in Windows and Excel.
  • Knowledge of control theory and HVAC/building automation systems.
  • Knowledge of project accounting, costing principles, and contracting (preferred).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, or equivalent, with six years of field experience in the HVAC industry.
  • Experience preparing reports for upper management regarding project status.
  • High regard for employee and subcontractor safety.
