Job description

Description
The Department of Religion at Denison University invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) position in the Islamic studies subfield to begin in August 2027. We seek a broadly trained scholar of religion whose teaching and research engage diverse historical and geographic contexts within the Islamic tradition. Teaching responsibilities will include an introduction to the study of religion course, a survey of Islam, thematic seminars centered on Islamic traditions, and additional topical and/or theoretical courses that support the Religion major. The successful candidate will also teach writing-intensive courses that fulfill Denison's writing program requirements. (More information about the writing program is available at http://denison.edu/academics/writing-program.) The standard teaching load is five courses per academic year.
We seek an outstanding teacher-scholar who is committed to undergraduate education and thrives in the interdisciplinary environment of a residential liberal arts college. The Department of Religion is engaged in an exciting curricular restructuring and welcomes a colleague eager to help shape the future of the academic study of religion at Denison. Our curriculum emphasizes critical inquiry, close engagement with religious traditions, and the exploration of theoretical questions that illuminate religion across cultures and historical periods.
We value teaching and advising that encourage intellectual curiosity, thoughtful dialogue, and engagement with diverse perspectives. The successful candidate will contribute to a vibrant, multivocal learning community and participate fully in the intellectual life of the department and the college through teaching, advising, scholarship, and service. Denison faculty are expected to maintain an active research agenda that results in scholarly publication and supports continued professional growth toward tenure.
Denison is a highly selective, residential liberal arts college enrolling approximately 2,400 students from across the nation and around the world. The college is located in the village of Granville, 30 minutes from Columbus, Ohio, the state capital, which hosts a wide range of cultural and artistic opportunities. Granville offers an excellent public school system and easy access to outdoor activities. A supportive environment for teacher-scholars who value both classroom and research excellence, Denison offers extensive support for its faculty, including an annual professional development account, competitive professional development funding, and a one-semester research leave after a successful pre-tenure review. The college also offers opportunities for student-faculty research collaboration, stipends for supervising summer-research students and a range of workshops and mentoring programs to develop our strengths as teacher-scholars. Denison offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package, including tuition benefits for eligible dependents to attend Denison or other affiliated colleges, and a generous retirement contribution.
