Job description

Job Description Summary:

An Artist-In-Residence is an artist (visual art, music, movement, literary arts) who is trained to provide artistic engagements (drawing, playing an instrument, writing) to cancer patients, their families and caregivers. An AIR offers a distraction from the hospital environment, models ways to be creative, resourceful, and demonstrates how to adapt to a variety of situations through the creative process.

Responsibilities And Duties:

An AIR understands how to interact and connect through the use of art. An AIR offers art for art's sake. The art process is for the benefit of the patient and/or participant and not the AIR. All supplies utilized by an AIR are non-toxic, contain no smelly fumes or vapors and do not pose a threat to participants. An AIR is comfortable in the medical setting and seeks patient referrals from clinical staff members. An AIR maintains appropriate boundaries focusing on the creative process and how a patient can use the process to distract, create, cope and problem solve.
1. 70% Offer art for art's sake.
2. 20% Report patient interaction, attend monthly meetings.
3. 10% Plan/prep for interaction.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School or GED (Required)

Additional Job Description:

Artwork (visual or auditory) portfolio that represents a skillful use of art materials and high-quality productions. Experienced in applying arts in medical setting and ability to mentor other artists new to artist in residence. Demonstrated leadership and programming development. 4 to 6 years' experience with a chosen art media (visual art, music, performance, literary). Able to demonstrate compassion and active listening. Able to understand the stressors of a medical illness, being hospitalized. Able to maintain boundaries as a professional providing art for arts sake.
