What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Training Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Training Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, adult learning methodologies, and often a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with technical training tools, e-learning platforms, and certifications like Certified Technical Trainer (CTT+) are commonly required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and interpersonal skills help Training Engineers effectively convey complex concepts and engage diverse learners. These skills ensure that technical knowledge is transferred effectively, supporting both employee development and organizational goals.

What are some typical challenges faced by Training Engineers when developing technical training materials for diverse audiences?

Training Engineers often encounter the challenge of creating instructional materials that are accessible and engaging for participants with varying levels of technical expertise. They must balance depth and clarity, ensuring content is neither too simplistic for advanced learners nor too complex for beginners. Additionally, staying current with rapidly evolving technologies and adapting materials for different learning formats—such as in-person workshops, online modules, and hands-on labs—requires strong organizational and communication skills. Collaborating closely with subject matter experts and receiving feedback from trainees are key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring training effectiveness.

What are Training Engineers?

Training Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and deliver technical training programs, typically for employees or customers using specialized equipment, software, or systems. They combine subject matter expertise with teaching skills to ensure participants understand and can effectively use complex products or technologies. Training Engineers often assess learning needs, create instructional materials, and evaluate training effectiveness to continuously improve learning outcomes.

Training Engineers focus on developing and delivering technical training in engineering and manufacturing environments, often requiring technical degrees and certifications. Training Coordinators handle organizing and managing training programs across various industries, emphasizing facilitation and administrative skills. While both roles involve training, Training Engineers are more technical and specialized, whereas Training Coordinators focus on logistics and program management.

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Engineer in Training (EIT) is an entry-level engineering position designed to provide hands-on experience in precast concrete design, production, and project coordination. This role supports senior engineers in structural analysis, project execution, and cross-functional collaboration while working toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure. The EIT gains exposure to multiple aspects of engineering, including design, manufacturing, and field operations.
SAFETY IS OUR HIGHEST PRIORITY. Safety is our highest priority. We believe a safe workplace is built on mutual respect, care, and accountability. Every team member is empowered and expected to follow safety practices, look out for one another, and speak up about potential risks. Together, we create an environment where everyone goes home safely each day.
WHY JOIN OUR TEAM?
At Wells, we empower talented team members to deliver exceptional client experiences through innovative problem-solving across preconstruction, engineering, operations, and project management. Guided by honesty and hard work, we build lasting trust while continuously improving building processes. Through strong collaboration, we deliver safe, reliable results that reduce risk and help our clients and communities succeed.

  • Health and family care leave is available to both union and non-union employees.
  • Union employee benefits are provided through separate collective bargaining agreements

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Support structural design and analysis of precast concrete components under senior engineer guidance
  • Interpret architectural and structural drawings and perform basic engineering calculations
  • Assist with project coordination, tracking milestones, and supporting deliverable schedules
  • Collaborate with internal teams including engineering, production, and field operations
  • Identify project issues and assist in developing solutions with senior engineers
  • Provide engineering support to sales, estimating, and project development teams
  • Participate in site and plant visits to gain field and manufacturing exposure
  • Assist in resolving technical issues and supporting corrective actions on projects
  • Communicate with contractors, architects, and internal stakeholders as needed
  • Maintain compliance with engineering standards, safety requirements, and project procedures

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
The ideal candidate is a motivated early-career engineer who is eager to build a strong foundation in structural engineering and the precast industry. They are detail-oriented, proactive, and willing to learn across design, production, and field environments. This individual is collaborative, adaptable, and driven to grow technically while progressing toward Professional Engineer licensure.
IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (ABET-accredited preferred)
  • 0-3 years of engineering experience, preferably in precast or structural design
  • Basic proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities
  • Self-motivated with desire to pursue PE licensure
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Occasional visits to active plant and field locations are required based on operational needs.
  • Ability to wear all required PPE, including but not limited to safety boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, high visibility vest, hard hat, and other PPE as required while in the plant and field.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and navigate active plant and field environments as needed.
  • Must be able to climb stairs, walk on uneven surfaces, and safely move through industrial work areas.
  • May be exposed to moving equipment, machinery, and other standard industrial hazards.
  • May be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, rain, as well as noise, dust, and vibration.
