VTG Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in Python, Java, or Scala), a solid understanding of data structures and algorithms, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with big data frameworks (like Hadoop or Spark), database systems (SQL/NoSQL), and data pipeline tools is typically required, along with relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Data Analytics. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are soft skills that set top performers apart. These skills ensure the efficient design, development, and optimization of robust data systems critical for driving business insights and decision-making.

What are some common challenges Data Software Engineers face when working with large datasets?

Data Software Engineers often encounter challenges related to scalability, data quality, and system performance when handling large datasets. Ensuring that data pipelines can efficiently process high volumes of data without bottlenecks requires robust architecture and frequent optimization. Additionally, maintaining data integrity and consistency across distributed systems can be complex, especially when integrating data from multiple sources. Collaboration with data scientists, analysts, and DevOps teams is key to overcoming these challenges and building reliable, efficient data solutions.

What are Data Software Engineers?

Data Software Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain the software systems that enable organizations to collect, process, and analyze large volumes of data. They bridge the gap between data engineering and software development by creating scalable, efficient pipelines and applications that support data-driven decision making. Their responsibilities often include developing data processing frameworks, ensuring data quality, and collaborating with data scientists and analysts to deliver actionable insights.

What is the difference between Data Software Engineer vs Data Engineer?

AspectData Software EngineerData Engineer
Primary FocusDeveloping software tools and applications for data processing and analysisBuilding and maintaining data pipelines and infrastructure
Skills & CertificationsProgramming, software development, data modeling, often with certifications in software engineeringDatabase systems, ETL tools, cloud platforms, often with certifications in data engineering
Work EnvironmentSoftware development teams, data science teams, often in tech companiesData infrastructure teams, IT departments, cloud service providers

While both roles work with data, Data Software Engineers focus on creating software solutions for data analysis, whereas Data Engineers build the infrastructure to collect, store, and process data efficiently. Both roles require programming skills and often overlap, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

Job description

Overview
VTG is seeking an experienced Technical Director to lead and align technical execution across Department of Defense (DoD) and Intelligence Community (IC) digital optimization programs. This role serves as the senior technical authority responsible for shaping secure, scalable, and mission-aligned solutions that modernize legacy systems and accelerate operational outcomes. The ideal candidate will bring progressive experience supporting complex DoD/IC environments, combining deep technical expertise with strategic leadership, customer trust, and disciplined execution in classified and regulated settings.
What will you do?
  • Serve as the Chief Technical Authority across multiple DoD/IC programs, ensuring solutions align with mission objectives, security constraints, and operational realities
  • Define and govern technical architectures, standards, and engineering best practices for cleared environments (on-prem, hybrid, cloud)
  • Lead and mentor senior technical staff across software engineering, cloud, data, cybersecurity, and DevSecOps disciplines
  • Translate mission needs and operational requirements into secure, maintainable, and scalable technical solutions
  • Drive adoption of modern engineering practices including DevSecOps, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and automated testing within classified constraints
  • Ensure compliance with DoD/IC policies and frameworks (e.g., RMF, Zero Trust, ICD 503, NIST)
  • Partner with Program Managers to manage technical risk, cost, schedule, and performance
  • Engage senior government stakeholders (O-6/SES/GS-15 equivalent) as a trusted technical advisor
  • Support capture and proposal efforts, including technical solutioning, staffing strategies, and risk mitigation
  • Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies to enhance mission effectiveness while maintaining security posture

Do you have what it takes?
Required Qualifications/Skills/Abilities:
  • US citizenship
  • Active Top Secret / SCI clearance or ability to obtain
  • 10-15 years of relevant technical experience, including senior leadership roles on DoD or IC programs
  • Proven experience designing and delivering solutions in classified or highly regulated environments
  • Strong background in modern software architectures, cloud computing (AWS, Azure, or hybrid), and enterprise IT modernization
  • Hands-on knowledge of DevSecOps, automation tools, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure as code
  • Solid foundation in cybersecurity principles, Zero Trust architecture, and secure system design
  • Experience working within RMF / ATO processes and collaborating with security stakeholders
  • DoD 8140 compliant certification required (e.g., CompTIA Security+ CE or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams, influence across organizations, and communicate effectively with both engineers and senior leaders
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (Master's preferred)

Preferred Qualifications/Skills/Abilities:
  • Experience supporting Air Force, Space Force, Combatant Commands, or IC agencies
  • Prior role as Chief Engineer, Principal Architect, or Technical Lead on large-scale defense programs
  • Familiarity with data platforms, analytics, AI/ML, or C5ISR-related systems
  • Experience supporting proposals, task order captures, or architecting solutions for IDIQ contracts
