Job description

Job Summary:
The Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical) is responsible for providing skilled nursing care to patients in an acute care hospital setting with a focus on medical-surgical cases. This role includes patient assessments, medication administration, case management, and collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. The nurse will manage complex clinical needs including telemetry monitoring, wound care, IV therapy, respiratory support, and post-surgical care. A minimum of two years of medical-surgical nursing experience is required, along with strong clinical and communication skills.
Responsibilities:
  • Perform patient assessments and monitor clinical status using telemetry and remote monitoring equipment.
  • Administer medications including heparin, insulin, and PCA following prescribed protocols.
  • Manage IV therapy including starting IVs, blood product administration, and care of central, peripheral, and PICC lines.
  • Provide specialized care for gastrointestinal needs such as colostomy and feeding tube management.
  • Support genitourinary/renal care including pre/post hemodialysis management and renal failure monitoring.
  • Deliver respiratory care including CPAP/BiPAP, high flow nasal cannula, oxygen therapy, and tracheostomy management.
  • Manage neurological and orthopedic trauma patients, including spinal cord injuries and surgical drains.
  • Implement isolation precautions and provide wound care including wound vac management.
  • Respond to emergencies and participate in rapid response teams as required.
  • Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Document patient care accurately in the electronic medical record system (Cerner).
  • Float to other units within scope as needed to meet facility needs.
Required Skills & Certifications:
  • Active Registered Nurse license in Illinois.
  • Minimum of 2 years medical-surgical nursing experience.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Proficient in telemetry and cardiac monitoring.
  • Experience with IV therapy, blood product administration, and central line management.
  • Knowledge of respiratory care devices and techniques.
  • Strong clinical skills in wound care, isolation precautions, and emergency response.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced acute care hospital environment.
Preferred Skills & Certifications:
  • Experience with orthopedic trauma and spinal cord injury care.
  • Familiarity with surgical drain management.
  • Experience in a Magnet-designated hospital or Level I trauma center environment.
Special Considerations:
  • Will work every other weekend.
  • No on-call requirement.
  • Floating to other units within scope as needed.
  • Parking permit required but no cost for parking.
  • Must adhere to facility's RTO policy with ideally no more than 5 days off-site.
  • Guaranteed hours with potential client call-offs up to 36 hours per thirteen-week assignment.
Scheduling:
  • Three 12-hour night shifts per week (1845-0715).
  • Schedule requests and block scheduling to be discussed with manager.
  • Shift assignments may vary to accommodate operational needs.
