The Manager of Project Controls is a vital part of the U.S. Engineering Construction team and holds responsibility for contributing to the profitability and success of projects.  This position is responsible for the direct management of project team schedules and productivity portfolios. The implementation, performing and overseeing of various levels of project schedules and controls functions are as follows: Project schedule development; critical path method (CPM) analysis; unit- and/or cost-loading, monitoring and progressing; obtaining/preparing internal schedules and their corresponding progress updates, creating associated analytical reports for engineering, project development, and construction needs.
Principal Duties and Accountabilities:   
  • Oversee the creation and/or collaboration and implementation of project control processes across the various regional divisions of the company.
  • Partner with project development managers, project managers, field supervision personnel, other contractors, and/or clients to ensure the quality development of project schedules.
  • Develop, evaluate, maintain, and distribute project schedules in support of the various departments within the company, e.g. project development, construction, special projects, etc.
  • Understand and comply with any necessary work breakdown structures (WBS), code structures, and/or schedule formats necessary to fulfill individual project requirements.
  • Perform loading of budgeted cost or resource data into project schedules when necessary.
  • Update and maintain project schedule information such as progress, manpower budgets, and project performance on a periodic basis necessary to fulfill individual project’s needs.
  • Compile schedule reports on a periodic basis necessary to fulfill individual project needs.
  • Provide oversight for the integrated project CPM schedule including the monitoring of project milestones and other interdependencies between activities/projects.
  • Analyze variances in cost and schedule performance against the baseline estimate and schedule and communicate reasons for variances to relevant management entities.
  • Identify trends and deviations and recommend corrective courses of action.
  • Provide project managers with backup documentation, data analysis, and reports to assist in the management of their projects and dissemination of related information, reports, and deliverables to project partners and/or clients.
  • Prepare, edit, and publish reports in an accurate and timely manner to reflect the status of projects in formats acceptable to the project managers and/or clients.
  • Assist in the preparation of specialty schedules, project labor forecasts, and/or cash flows reports.
  • Provide required CPM schedule analysis and reporting on construction CPM schedules by developing schedules, reviewing baseline and progress schedules submitted by general contractors, construction managers, and/or clients.
  • Interface with the estimating and/or accounting departments within the company as needed in the normal course of daily responsibilities.
  • Provide training on scheduling topics to project development managers, project managers, and field supervision personnel when appropriate.
  • Attend weekly project management meetings and weekly project development meetings.
Job Scope: 
The Manager of Project Controls should possess the ability to effectively manage the staff necessary to manage multiple project schedules simultaneously across the various regional divisions of the company.
Management Responsibility
Acts in capacity as “lead” person but does not have management responsibility for the people to whom direction is provided.  List positions receiving direction: Mentors Project Engineers, and less experienced Project Managers, as well as other project team members, with regard to project controls. 
Supervisor – responsible for hiring, performance management and pay administration for subordinates.  List supervised positions: Senior Project Controls Manager, Project Controls Manager and Project Controls Engineer.
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Construction Science, Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering preferred OR Equivalent combination of field (e.g. pipefitter/plumber) and leadership experience may be considered.
  • 10+ years of mechanical contracting scheduling and project controls experience involving CPM scheduling of stand-alone and multi-project work programs, including the development, unit- and/or cost-loading, monitoring, progressing, reporting and presentation of project schedules for engineering, project development, and construction phases of work.
  • Broad knowledge of HVAC and plumbing systems and experience in various business sectors of mechanical contracting involving various project contract delivery methods.
  • Experience with management, control, forecasting, and trending of cost and labor budgets.
  • Proficient experience with Asta Powerproject, Primavera P6, Smartsheets, Microsoft PowerBI, and Microsoft Project.
  • Must have computer skills in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and experience developing complex spreadsheets and using databases.
  • Must be willing to participate in on-going continuing education and the pursuit of appropriate credentials beneficial to the overall competency of the company.

Physical and/or travel demands:  
  • Work will be done in a combination of office and job site environments.
  • Project needs may require travel, temporary assignment, or relocation.
  • Physical demands include walking on uneven surfaces, climbing ladders, bending, kneeling, and lifting.   Positions include sitting and standing, use of telephone, keyboard, and computer monitor.
Benefits and Compensation:
  • The range for this position has been established at $90,480.00 - $128,000.00
    and is U.S. Engineering’s good faith and reasonable estimate at the time of the posting. The compensation offered to the finalist selected for this role will be based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training. 
  • Your total compensation will go beyond the number on your paycheck. Team members are eligible for a year-end bonus based on company and/or individual performance as well as paid time off. An industry-leading benefits package, including health, dental, and vision plans, matching retirement contributions, and matching 529 contributions all add to your bottom line.
