Job description

Educational Sign Language Interpreter (School-Based)

We are seeking a qualified Educational Sign Language Interpreter to support a 5th-grade student in a school-based setting. In this role, you will facilitate communication between a deaf or hard-of-hearing student and teachers, staff, and peers, ensuring equal access to classroom instruction, educational activities, and school-related discussions.

American Sign Language (ASL) will be used to interpret spoken language into sign language and vice versa. In addition to interpreting services, the selected candidate will provide some educational support to the student throughout the school day.

Position Details
  • Position Type: School-Based Sign Language Interpreter
  • Schedule: 30 hours per week
  • Contract Length: 40 weeks
  • Start Date: September 2, 2026
  • Openings: 1
  • Assignment: 1:1 support for a 5th-grade student
  • Daily Hours: 6 hours per day
  • Client Interview Required: Yes
  • Interview Process: Meeting with the SPED Director and District Sign Language Interpreter (preferably in person)
  • Timekeeping System: MaxView Timeclock
Responsibilities
  • Interpret classroom instruction and school-related communication using ASL.
  • Facilitate communication between the student, educators, staff, and peers.
  • Support the student's access to academic and educational activities.
  • Maintain professional standards and confidentiality in accordance with school and interpreting guidelines.
  • Collaborate with educational staff to support student success.
Minimum Requirements
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field preferred
  • State Board of Education Initial Sign Language Interpreter Certificate (if required by state regulations)
  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certification (if required by state regulations or client requirements)
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification (if required by state regulations or client requirements)
  • Compliance with all applicable professional standards of practice
  • Current CPR certification, if required
  • TB questionnaire, PPD, or chest X-ray, if required
  • Current health certificate, if required by state regulations or contract requirements
  • Ability to meet all federal, state, and local requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
Compensation

Local Rate: $52/hour
