Staff / Principal Battery Systems Engineer - Performance & Integration

Gotion, Inc.

Fremont, CA • On-site

Full-time

Posted 15 days ago

Job description

Gotion Inc. is based in Silicon Valley, CA, currently building a Manufacturing facility in Manteno, IL and has R&D centers in Ohio, China, Japan and Europe. We innovate in the next generation electric vehicle and energy storage technologies (lithium batteries and related systems) with the aim to accelerate electrified transportation and achieve sustainable development. Gotion is powered by a leading power battery technology company that provides solutions for vehicles including the world's first mass commercial e-bus route.
Gotion is a career destination - we are not simply attempting to just fill another job, but to pursue a dream of global green energy together! We offer outstanding opportunities to individuals seeking an exciting and challenging working environment. Everyone is highly valued and plays a vital role in the growth of our organization.
About the Role
Gotion is strengthening its North American EV engineering organization to support next-generation battery programs with leading automotive customers.
We are looking for an experienced Staff / Principal Battery Systems Engineer - Performance & Integration to serve as a key technical owner for HV battery system performance and integration in North America.
This is not a component-level design or test-only role. You will work at the intersection of vehicle requirements, battery cells, pack systems, BMS/controls, thermal systems, and validation, translating customer vehicle-level requirements into battery system targets and driving technical decisions through development, validation, and vehicle integration.
The role will have significant visibility with both customers and Gotion's global engineering teams and offers the opportunity to help shape our North American battery systems engineering capability.
What You'll Do
  • Own and drive HV battery system performance and integration for North American EV programs, from customer requirements through system validation and issue resolution.
  • Translate vehicle-level requirements into system, pack, cell, BMS, thermal, and validation requirements and performance targets.
  • Lead technical trade-off analysis across energy, power, fast charging, thermal performance, durability, aging, safety, cost, and packaging.
  • Serve as a primary technical interface between OEM customers and Gotion's Cell, Pack, BMS, Thermal, Electrical, CAE, and Validation teams.
  • Develop and maintain system-level requirements, performance specifications, SORs, DFMEAs, diagnostic requirements, and technical documentation.
  • Analyze battery and vehicle data to identify performance limitations and root causes and drive cross-functional resolution.
  • Support and technically lead battery performance validation, including fast charging, cold/hot weather, power capability, energy/range, aging, and vehicle-level testing.
  • Partner with BMS and controls teams on SOC/SOH, power limits, charging strategy, fault handling, diagnostics, and system-level control requirements.
  • Support vehicle launch and field issue resolution, ensuring technical issues are driven to closure across customer and internal engineering organizations.
  • Help establish system engineering methodologies, technical standards, and engineering capability for Gotion's growing North American EV organization.
  • Provide technical mentorship to engineers and influence technical decisions across programs without relying solely on organizational authority.
What We're Looking For
  • BS/MS/PhD in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Automotive, Systems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience in EV, HV battery, battery pack, or electrified powertrain systems engineering. Exceptional candidates with fewer years but significant system ownership experience will be considered.
  • Strong understanding of HV battery system architecture, including cells, modules, packs, BMS, HV components, thermal systems, sensing, charging, and vehicle interfaces.
  • Demonstrated experience in at least several of the following:
    • Battery system architecture and requirements
    • Battery performance and characterization
    • Vehicle / battery systems integration
    • BMS and controls interface
    • Fast charging and power capability
    • SOC / SOH / aging
    • Thermal performance
    • System validation and vehicle testing
    • Functional safety / diagnostics
  • Experience translating OEM/customer requirements into battery system specifications and engineering targets.
  • Proven ability to solve complex system-level problems involving multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Strong technical communication skills and ability to work directly with OEM engineering organizations.
  • Experience with Rivian, Lucid, Tesla, Ford, GM, Stellantis, or other EV/OEM battery programs is highly valued.
The Profile We Value
We are particularly interested in engineers who have moved beyond a single component or discipline and can think across the complete battery system.
The ideal candidate can answer questions such as:
What does the vehicle need? → What must the battery system deliver? → What does that mean for the pack, cells, BMS, thermal system and validation strategy?
You should be comfortable taking ownership of ambiguous system-level problems, bringing the right technical teams together, making engineering trade-offs, and driving issues through resolution.
Why This Role
This role offers the opportunity to move beyond ownership of an individual subsystem and have broader influence over battery system architecture, performance, customer integration, and technical decision-making.
As Gotion expands its North American engineering capability, strong performers will have the opportunity to take broader technical ownership, mentor and build engineering capability, and help define how our EV battery systems organization operates.
Gotion Inc. is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We are dedicated to fostering a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve, cultivating a culture of inclusion and belonging, and ensuring equal employment opportunities for all.
We provide equal opportunity to all individuals regardless of race, creed, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, marital status, pregnancy or related conditions (including breastfeeding), parental status, criminal histories consistent with legal requirements, or any other characteristic protected by law.
At Gotion Inc., we strive to create an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.
