To thrive as a Software Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, problem-solving skills, and typically be pursuing a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages like Python, Java, or C++, version control systems such as Git, and exposure to development environments are commonly expected. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork set standout interns apart. These skills allow interns to effectively contribute to projects, adapt to new technologies, and collaborate within software development teams.

What types of projects and tasks are Software Engineer Interns typically assigned, and how do these contribute to their learning and development?

Software Engineer Interns are often assigned to real-world projects that align with the team's current goals, such as developing new features, fixing bugs, or writing automated tests. Interns usually work under the guidance of experienced engineers and participate in code reviews, stand-up meetings, and collaborative problem-solving sessions. These tasks help interns gain practical experience with industry-standard tools and workflows, while also building their technical and teamwork skills. As a result, interns can expect to leave the internship with concrete contributions to the product and a better understanding of software development processes.

What does a Software Engineer Intern do?

A Software Engineer Intern assists in designing, developing, and testing software applications under the guidance of experienced engineers. Interns typically work on coding tasks, bug fixes, documentation, and sometimes participate in team meetings or code reviews. The primary goal is to gain hands-on experience with real-world software development processes and tools while contributing to ongoing projects. This internship provides valuable exposure to industry practices and helps interns build technical and collaborative skills.

Job description

Global Technology Solutions (GTS) at ResMed is a division dedicated to creating innovative, scalable, and secure platforms and services for patients, providers, and people across ResMed. The primary goal of GTS is to accelerate well-being and growth by transforming the core, enabling patient, people, and partner outcomes, and building future-ready operations.

The strategy of GTS focuses on aligning goals and promoting collaboration across all organizational areas. This includes fostering shared ownership, developing flexible platforms that can easily scale to meet global demands, and implementing global standards for key processes to ensure efficiency and consistency.

At ResMed, we are changing lives with every breath - improve patient quality of life, prevent chronic disease progression and reduce healthcare system costs. Our mission is to delight ResMed's developer community with an opinionated, yet empathetic developer experience that avoids surprise, is a joy to use, and abstracts the complexities of modern development to accelerate the pace of ResMed's next generation Healthcare Informatics platform.

As a Software Engineer, you must possess world class technical skills and a strong sense of empathy for your fellow developers. You will work closely with other talented engineers, architects and stakeholders to architect, implement, and deliver on our roadmap.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities
  • Champion a developer-first mindset, bringing deep empathy for the challenges of modern software development and continuously improving the developer experience across the organization.
  • Design, build, and maintain developer-facing platforms, tools, and services that accelerate software delivery and reduce cognitive load for engineering teams.
  • Build and evolve platform engineering capabilities, including CI/CD pipelines, observability, reliability, and cloud-native infrastructure.
  • Collaborate across teams and effectively present ideas and solutions to peers, stakeholders, and leadership.
  • Participate in a 24/7, follow-the-sun on-call rotation for production systems, including weekends and holidays.
Qualifications and Experience
  • BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
  • 1+ years of experience in software engineering, platform engineering, or developer experience roles.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Java, JavaScript, Python, Go, or TypeScript, with a strong foundation in computer science fundamentals.
  • Experience or familiarity with CI/CD systems, build pipelines, and developer workflows (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Bitbucket Pipelines).
  • Understanding of cloud computing and containerization (e.g., AWS, Kubernetes, Docker).
  • Exposure to observability practices (monitoring, logging, tracing) and tools is a plus.
  • Knowledge of software testing practices and quality engineering principles.
  • Familiarity with source control, pull requests, and automated quality gates.
  • Interest in or exposure to Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) concepts such as reliability, scalability, and incident management.
  • Passion for learning, problem-solving, and improving the developer experience at scale.
