What You Will Do:

As a Machinist, you'll perform precision machining, repair, and rework operations on aircraft engine components while ensuring compliance with engineering specifications, FAA regulations, and Pratt & Whitney quality standards. The person in this role may be required to train on first shift up-to six months before moving into 2nd shift. 2nd shift is Monday-Thursday from 3:30pm-1:30am.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform precision rework operations including boring, honing, lapping, grinding, and machining to restore aircraft engine components.

  • Operate manual and CNC machine tools including lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses, and EDM equipment to complete repair and overhaul activities.

  • Perform drilling, reaming, tapping, deburring, polishing, blending, filing, and other bench operations using a variety of hand and power tools.

  • Set up and machine parts using fixtures or centers while verifying alignment, runout, and dimensional accuracy.

  • Inspect completed work using precision measuring equipment including micrometers, height gauges, dial indicators, bore gauges, and other inspection tools.

  • Verify critical dimensions such as gear mounting distances, backlash, end play, fits, and clearances to engineering requirements.

  • Machine and finish specialty coatings applied to aircraft engine components.

  • Fabricate, modify, and maintain tooling including fixtures, gauges, adapters, bushings, templates, pullers, and cutting tools.

  • Modify work holding and tooling solutions to support unique repair processes and non-standard component configurations.

  • Perform shrink-fit assembly operations and support complex repair processes.

  • Repair, maintain, and improve machine tools and shop equipment as required.

  • Read and interpret overhaul manuals, engineering drawings, blueprints, sketches, service bulletins, and work instructions.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to improve tooling, repair methods, and machining processes.

  • Mentor and assist less experienced machinists while promoting a culture of teamwork, quality, and safety.

Pratt & Whitney in Bridgeport, WV is a FAA regulated facility and as such under the U.S. Departments of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This position is considered safety sensitive in accordance with FAA Guidelines. Candidate will be subject to drug and alcohol testing per FAA’s regulation 14 CFR part 120, as well as 49 CFR part 40.

  • Learn about full engine tear-down and overhaul process and P&W Quality Management standards

  • Learn machining operations involved in remanufacture of jet engine parts and components

  • Learn to perform setups and breakdowns for CNC Mills, CNC Lathes, Grinders other machine tools

Qualifications You Must Have ​

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Technical or vocational training in Machining Technology, Precision Manufacturing, or a related field

  • 2 years of experience with CNC programming, performing setups, and using CNC controls and G&M codes used in machining operations.

  • Ability to read or interpret Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing symbols (GD&T).

  • Knowledge of metal and other materials properties used in aerospace parts.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, engineering drawings and/or CAD/CAM files.

  • Ability to use precision measurement tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers etc.) typically used to inspect dimensions and features.

  • Familiar with all other supporting machine shop tools including bandsaws, table saw, drill press, grinders, pneumatic tools, routers, 3D printing (a plus) and tool sharpeners.

  • Knowledge of safety precautions related to occupational hazards, procedures, and practices of the trade.

  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Team Center and Solumina.
