POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Software Development Manager

Organizational Relationships: Reports to Vice President of Business Solutions

Supervisory Responsibilities: Assigned Software Development staff


General Function: Leads the development team performing full life cycle development of software solutions that allow Whitefish Credit Union to provide the highest level of service to its members. Works collaboratively with business and technical stakeholders, facilitating communication, managing expectations, and ensuring alignment to create robust solutions that streamline and extend WCU business processes. Responsible for overseeing the design, development, testing and troubleshooting applications, customizations, and integrations utilizing modern software development techniques. 

Position Functions:

Leadership & Team Management

  • Establish, enhance, and maintain development processes, standards, and performance across the full software development lifecycle.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the Software Development Team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Manage and prioritize the development backlog to align resources with business priorities and timelines.
  • Promote innovation and drive continuous improvement.
  • Promote a culture of respect, accountability, and continuous improvement; maintain professionalism and avoid behaviors that negatively impact team culture or trust.
  • Effectively manage time, resources, and personnel, with working knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, shift scheduling, training and performance evaluation.
  • Review and approve staff timecards within prescribed timeline.
  • Ensure that all staff comply with the 5-consecutive-days out-of-office policy.
  • Participate in Whitefish Credit Union-sponsored and community-centered events.

Software Development & Delivery

  • Assist in the definition, development, and documentation of software business requirements, objectives, deliverables, and specifications in collaboration with internal users and departments.
  • Oversee all phases of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC): requirements, design, development, testing, deployment, and support.
  • Ensure the delivery of secure, scalable, and maintainable software solutions.
  • Establish and enforce development standards, code quality practices, and documentation requirements.
  • Conduct and/or oversee code reviews to ensure consistency and adherence to best practices.
  • Create full-stack web applications that streamline and enhance the core banking system.
  • Maintain and extend the credit union’s automated processes.
  • Maintain documentation relating to programs or scripts for reference.

Technical Strategy & Architecture

  • Partner with IT leadership to define and implement application architecture and development standards.
  • Evaluate and recommend emerging technologies, tools, and frameworks to improve efficiency and capabilities.
  • Design and oversee integrations between core banking systems and external platforms using APIs and middleware solutions.
  • Support cloud adoption, DevOps practices, and automation strategies where appropriate.

Operational Support

  • Provide technical oversight and escalation support for internally developed applications and reporting solutions.
  • Ensure application performance, reliability, availability, and supportability.
  • Oversee troubleshooting, root‑cause analysis, and remediation of complex issues.
  • Participate in on‑call support and planned after‑hours maintenance as required.

Data & Reporting

  • Oversee development and delivery of reports utilizing core banking systems, SQL, SSRS, and Excel.
  • Ensure data integrity, accuracy, and accessibility to support business decision‑making.
  • Partner with business units to deliver actionable insights through reporting and data solutions.

Cross-Functional & Vendor Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Business Systems, Project Management, Infrastructure, and Security teams on enterprise initiatives.
  • Provide software development consulting and technical guidance for new business initiatives and projects.
  • Manage relationships with third‑party vendors and core system providers related to development, integrations, and custom solutions.
  • Ensure vendor deliverables and service levels meet organizational standards and expectations.

Compliance & Risk

  • Ensure applications and development practices comply with applicable regulations and guidance (e.g., PCI, NCUA, GLBA, FFIEC).
  • Partner with Information Security to implement secure development and data protection practices.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate application and data‑related risks.
  • Support internal and external audits and regulatory examinations through proper controls and documentation.

Position Requirements:

  • Technical requirements:
    • Experience with full-stack application development.
    • Proficiency with front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
    • Proficiency with back-end technologies (Golang, Python, Node.js or similar).
    • Proficiency with relational databases and SQL.
    • Experience with API technologies (REST, SOAP, GraphQL).
    • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git).
    • Ability to analyze, convert, and merge data from disparate systems.
    • Familiarity with basic networking and general PC support.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally, in writing, and over the phone, with members, co-workers, external professionals, and senior management.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills.
  • Possess and display a high level of interpersonal skills, including the development and maintenance of professional relationships.
  • Advanced understanding of clerical procedures, office equipment and computer systems, including recordkeeping and filing.
  • Ability and willingness to go above and beyond expected work schedule to accomplish what is needed within assigned department(s) and the organization as a whole. Availability for on-call support, including nights and weekends when required.
  • Ability and willingness to pursue and obtain additional professional training and/or certifications as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to other branches.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 lbs., with or without accommodation.
  • Complete mandatory annual BSA training that includes Red Flag, Identity Theft, OFAC, CTR and SAR reporting and thresholds, as well as the safe keeping of member information, and passes any applicable tests.
  • Follow all Whitefish Credit Union, Montana and Federal information privacy laws and guidelines.
  • Adhere to all Whitefish Credit Union policies and procedures.
  • Protect Member and Whitefish Credit Union confidential information.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of relevant software development experience.
  • Prior leadership or mentoring experience.
  • Preferred technical experience:
    • Core banking systems (e.g., Symitar).
    • Modern JavaScript frameworks (React, Angular, Vue).
    • Reporting and BI tools (SSRS, Crystal Reports).
    • Containerization and deployment tools (Docker, Kubernetes).
    • Building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
    • Cloud platforms (Azure, AWS).
    • Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban).
