Commercial Portfolio Manager

An established and highly regarded commercial banking organization is seeking an experienced Commercial Portfolio Manager to join its San Fernando Valley office.

This is a key replacement hire supporting the region's commercial credit and portfolio management function. The successful candidate will work closely with regional credit leadership and Relationship Managers while taking meaningful ownership of assigned commercial relationships.

The position combines credit underwriting, portfolio management, risk oversight and direct client interaction. It is designed for an experienced commercial credit professional who can step into the role and contribute quickly with limited technical training.

Responsibilities

• Manage an assigned portfolio of commercial banking relationships.
• Perform comprehensive credit analysis on existing and prospective borrowers.
• Prepare and independently evaluate credit recommendations, renewals and annual reviews.
• Analyze financial statements, borrower performance, collateral, repayment capacity and overall credit risk.
• Monitor loan covenants, exceptions, reporting requirements and other portfolio-related deadlines.
• Identify emerging credit concerns and communicate risk issues proactively.
• Maintain accurate, timely and compliant credit files.
• Partner with Relationship Managers on underwriting, portfolio management, client retention and business development.
• Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned customer relationships.
• Communicate directly with commercial clients regarding credit, financial and deposit-related matters.
• Support the structuring of commercial credit facilities within established lending parameters.
• Assist in identifying opportunities to deepen existing client relationships.
• Provide thoughtful recommendations for improving credit processes and procedures.
• Ensure adherence to internal credit policies and applicable banking regulations.

Ideal Candidate Profile

• 5+ years of commercial credit, underwriting and/or portfolio management experience.
• Current Portfolio Manager experience strongly preferred.
• Experienced Senior Credit Analysts operating at a Portfolio Manager level may also be considered.
• Strong commercial credit underwriting and financial analysis capabilities.
• Experience managing renewals, annual reviews, covenant monitoring and ongoing portfolio risk.
• Ability to independently evaluate credits and make well-supported recommendations.
• Experience working with commercial and/or middle-market borrowers.
• Strong understanding of commercial loan structures and credit documentation.
• Professional written and verbal communication skills.
• Comfortable interacting directly with business owners, executives and commercial banking clients.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple credits and deadlines simultaneously.
• Collaborative approach to working with Relationship Managers and credit leadership.
• Proactive, accountable and capable of operating with limited day-to-day supervision.

Preferred Portfolio Experience

Candidates should ideally have experience managing a diversified commercial portfolio involving one or more of the following:

• Commercial and industrial borrowers
• Owner-operated and privately held businesses
• Middle-market commercial relationships
• Commercial real estate exposure
• Recurring credit renewals and annual reviews
• Covenant-driven credit facilities
• Relationships requiring ongoing financial analysis and risk monitoring

The specific size of a candidate's current portfolio is less important than the depth of their personal underwriting responsibility, quality of credit judgment and ability to independently manage commercial relationships.

Not a Fit If You

• Require significant training before independently managing commercial credits.
• Have primarily consumer or residential lending experience.
• Have limited experience beyond financial spreading or entry-level credit analysis.
• Prefer a purely back-office analytical position with no customer interaction.
• Are uncomfortable independently evaluating credit risk.
• Do not enjoy partnering closely with Relationship Managers.
• Struggle with deadlines, renewals, covenant tracking or portfolio organization.
• Are seeking a predominantly remote position.
• Prefer a purely sales-oriented role without meaningful underwriting responsibility.
