What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Scientist, you need a strong background in statistics, programming (often Python or R), and data analysis, typically supported by a degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with machine learning frameworks, data visualization tools, and big data platforms like TensorFlow, Tableau, and Hadoop, as well as certifications in data science, are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving skills, curiosity, and the ability to communicate complex findings clearly set outstanding data scientists apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for extracting actionable insights from data, driving business decisions, and collaborating effectively with stakeholders.

What are some typical projects Data Scientists work on, and how do they collaborate with other teams?

Data Scientists often work on projects such as building predictive models, analyzing large datasets to uncover trends, and developing data-driven solutions to business problems. They regularly collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, data engineers, and business analysts, to ensure that their insights are actionable and aligned with business goals. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as Data Scientists frequently need to present complex findings to non-technical stakeholders and incorporate feedback from various departments.

What are Data Scientists?

Data Scientists are professionals who use statistical, analytical, and programming skills to collect, analyze, and interpret large volumes of data. They extract insights and trends from complex data sets to help organizations make data-driven decisions. Data Scientists often work with machine learning, data mining, and big data technologies to build predictive models and solve business problems. Their work bridges the gap between technical data analysis and actionable business strategy.

What is the job of a data scientist?

A data scientist analyzes large datasets to extract insights and support decision-making using statistical methods, programming, and data visualization tools. They often work with machine learning models and require skills in programming languages like Python or R, as well as knowledge of databases and data analysis techniques.

What is the difference between Data Scientist vs Data Analyst?

AspectData Scientist
Required CredentialsDegree in Computer Science, Statistics, or related field; often requires advanced degrees
Work EnvironmentResearch and development, predictive modeling, machine learning projects
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, finance, healthcare, consulting firms
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared due to overlapping skills in data analysis and modeling

Data Scientists focus on building predictive models, advanced analytics, and machine learning, often requiring higher-level technical skills and education. Data Analysts primarily interpret existing data, generate reports, and support decision-making with descriptive analytics. While both roles analyze data, Data Scientists handle complex modeling and predictive tasks, whereas Data Analysts focus on data interpretation and reporting.

Job Title

Data Governance Engineer - Data Quality & Operations

About your role:

As a Data Governance Engineer - Data Quality & Operations (Advisor II), you will design, implement, and run enterprise data quality monitoring and governance operations for cyber datasets. You will work with security operations center (SOC), detection engineering, compliance, and cyber stakeholders so they can rely on high-quality, trusted data. You will establish automated controls, workflows, and training that improve cyber risk insights and decision-making.

What you'll do:

  • Operationalize the data governance framework with data quality gates, issue intake channels, triage service-level agreements (SLAs), and remediation playbooks for cyber datasets.
  • Partner with data stewards to define priority domains, accountable owners, and critical data element (CDE) quality expectations and document them in the data catalog.
  • Inventory and rationalize reports and dashboards based on data quality impact and business criticality, and drive remediation plans.
  • Deliver quick-win analytics pilots by validating and assuring dataset quality for production use.
  • Implement enterprise data quality monitoring integrated with Google BigQuery, Talend, and the metadata catalog.
  • Build and support standardized key performance indicator (KPI) dashboards by ensuring datasets meet defined data quality SLAs.
  • Expand self-service business intelligence (BI) adoption by defining quality SLAs, creating runbooks, and delivering training for tools such as Microsoft Power BI and Looker.
  • Collaborate with data science and engineering teams to ensure models use quality-gated inputs and have ongoing data quality monitoring.

Experience you'll need to have:

  • 6+ years of experience in data quality, data engineering, or data governance operations for analytics, risk, or cyber telemetry datasets.
  • 6+ years of experience writing advanced SQL and implementing monitoring, alerting, and remediation workflows integrated into CI/CD pipelines or scheduled data pipelines.
  • 4+ years of experience implementing or supporting data quality and testing frameworks with platforms such as Google BigQuery and Talend.
  • 4+ years of experience inventorying and assessing dashboards and reports, and prioritizing data quality remediation based on business impact.
  • 3+ years of experience running incident intake and triage processes, performing root-cause analysis, and driving data quality remediation to closure.
  • Skills in collaborating with cross-functional teams (for example, SOC, detection engineering, compliance, and data science) to translate requirements into data quality controls and operational processes.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, or related field, or equivalent combination of education, related experience and/or military experience.

Experience that would be great to have:

  • Experience with cybersecurity operations and/or financial services domains.
  • Experience with tools such as Axonius, Bindplane, or Cribl and with supporting model operationalization.
  • Certifications in DataOps or Google Cloud Platform (GCP), or equivalent combination of certifications, related experience and/or military experience.

How you'll work:

  • This role is on-site Monday through Friday. Fiserv considers in-person collaboration to be an essential part of this role as in-person office experiences help you with your overall onboarding experience and leads to stronger productivity.

Travel:

This role requires no travel.

Sponsorship:

  • Paid holidays and generous time away policies.
  • No-cost mental health support through Employee Assistance Programs.
  • Living Proof program to recognize your peers' extra effort with points redeemable for rewards.

  • Unparalleled professional growth with training, development, and internal mobility opportunities.
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance options available from day one.
  • Retirement planning and discounted shares with the Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
