Boiler Operator

Job Description

Overall Purpose and Objective of Position

The Utilities Operator is responsible for monitoring and operating plant boilers including all auxiliary equipment, responding to equipment issues or alarms, works in a safe and clean manner ensuring work area is kept clean and free from all safety hazards, and reports to the Utilities Supervisor. Excellent written, documentation and verbal communication skills, as well as a willingness to work a rotating shift schedule is required.

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Monitor and operate plant boilers including all ancillary equipment in the facility, such as Water Treatment Systems, Air Compressors, Wastewater Treatment Systems, and Refrigeration Systems
  • Respond to equipment issues or alarms; investigates and initiates resolution
  • Ensures compliance with Company safety rules and wears proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) as required in fulfillment of assigned responsibilities
  • Additional responsibilities include monitoring and adjustment of the water treatment plant, and cooling tower water quality and the operation of the Deodorizer vacuum system refrigeration system.
  • Work in an organized, safe, and clean manner, ensuring work area is kept clean and free from all safety hazards

Additional Responsibilities/Functions

  • Ensures work area is kept free from safety hazards which require regular bending and occasional lifting. Fully responsible for housekeeping as directed by management
  • Completes tasks assigned by the Utilities Supervisor
  • Actively participates in Shift/Team activities including complying with best practices, standard operating procedures, development and maintenance and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Actively participates in job-related training as required.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • State of Ohio High Pressure Boiler License

Basic qualifications:

  • 2-5 years of operating High Pressure Boilers

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)

  • Broad knowledge of steam processes, procedures, and equipment
  • Broad knowledge of water testing methods
  • Broad knowledge of plant production processes, procedures, and equipment
  • Strong mathematical skills and the ability to use statistical software.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner both written and verbal
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • General industrial maintenance knowledge
  • Knowledge of wastewater management

Equipment Used

  • Standard water testing equipment
  • Typical office equipment: PC, telephone, printer/scanner, fax machine.
  • Heavy machinery including bobcats, payloaders, forklifts etc

  • Maintains good working knowledge of Quality and Product Safety policies, rules and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to
  • Ensures employees are provided required training for area assigned, and jobs and tasks prior to assigning work
  • Ensures area of responsibility is maintained in orderly and product safe manner
  • Ensure unsafe product working conditions are remedied as soon as practicable

  • Follows established Operating procedures to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the steam plant to meet facility needs and production goals
  • Works independently on routine duties but consults with supervisor on any problems or unusual results
  • Consult with management about optimization and improvements on overall operations
  • Provide timely feedback to the shift leader regarding plant-wide mechanical breakdowns and repair needs before initiating maintenance support
  • Communicate testing results to necessary parties to ensure quality and meet production standards
  • Comply with governmental and company policies, regulations, and standards to ensure compliance
