Position Overview

The Electrical Supplier Quality Engineer is responsible for supplier quality surveillance, inspection, testing, and acceptance of electrical equipment manufactured for major industrial, power, energy, and EPC projects.

This position will serve as the technical quality representative for electrical equipment packages, with primary responsibility for Power Distribution Centers (PDCs), medium- and low-voltage switchgear, and Motor Control Centers (MCCs).

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 7 years of directly relevant experience in electrical equipment inspection, testing, manufacturing surveillance, and/or supplier quality, with demonstrated hands-on experience witnessing Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and inspecting PDCs, switchgear, and MCCs at supplier manufacturing facilities.
The Engineer will work closely with Engineering, Procurement, Project Management, Construction, suppliers, clients, and third-party inspection agencies to ensure equipment conforms to purchase orders, approved drawings, project specifications, applicable codes and standards, and contractual quality requirements prior to release and shipment.

Our principal quality objectives are to meet or exceed clients' expectations and to eliminate rework by performing our work "right the first time." We monitor our performance against these objectives and require continual improvement.

Location

This position is based in Lenexa, KS (Kansas City area).

Responsibilities

   Perform supplier quality surveillance and source inspections at electrical equipment manufacturers and fabrication facilities.
   Perform and/or witness inspections and Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) for:
o    Power Distribution Centers (PDCs) and electrical buildings/e-houses
o    Medium-voltage switchgear
o    Low-voltage switchgear and switchboards
o    Motor Control Centers (MCCs)
o    Associated electrical distribution, protection, control, and auxiliary systems
   Review supplier Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and establish appropriate review, witness, surveillance, and hold points based on project and equipment requirements.
   Review purchase orders, equipment specifications, datasheets, approved drawings, one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, vendor drawings, and applicable project requirements prior to inspection.
   Verify equipment construction and configuration against approved drawings, specifications, data sheets, and purchase-order requirements.
   Witness electrical and mechanical testing as applicable
   Inspect PDC/e-house construction for compliance with approved drawings and project requirements, including equipment arrangement, internal wiring, grounding, lighting, HVAC interfaces, fire and gas interfaces, penetrations, labeling, cable routing, and overall workmanship.
   Verify switchgear and MCC components including breakers, contactors, starters, protective relays, meters, CTs, PTs, control power transformers, bus systems, grounding systems, terminal blocks, and auxiliary devices against approved documentation.
   Coordinate FATs and supplier inspections with suppliers, project teams, clients, and third-party inspection agencies.
   Review and approve supplier manufacturing and quality documentation in accordance with project requirements.
   Identify, document, track, and support resolution of nonconformances (NCRs), punch-list items, deficiencies, and supplier quality issues.
   Review supplier corrective-action responses and verify satisfactory closure of identified deficiencies.
   Review supplier deviation requests, concessions, and technical queries from a quality perspective and coordinate disposition with Engineering and Project Management.
   Verify that all required inspections, testing, documentation, and NCR/punch-list closures have been satisfactorily completed prior to recommending equipment release for shipment.
   Review final supplier documentation packages, FAT reports, test records, certificates, inspection reports, and quality dossiers/data books for completeness and compliance.
   Prepare detailed supplier inspection reports documenting inspection activities, test results, deficiencies, photographs, outstanding items, and recommended disposition.
   Support supplier audits, supplier qualification activities, and supplier performance evaluations.
   Monitor supplier quality performance and identify recurring manufacturing or quality issues requiring corrective action.
   Coordinate inspection activities with procurement, engineering, expediting, logistics, construction, commissioning, and project quality personnel.
   Provide technical support for equipment quality issues identified during receiving inspection, installation, pre-commissioning, and commissioning.
   Travel approximately 50% of the time to supplier manufacturing facilities, project sites, and other locations as required.

Qualifications

   Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Quality, or a related technical discipline preferred. Equivalent extensive electrical inspection and supplier-quality experience may be considered where appropriate.
   Minimum 7 years of directly relevant experience in supplier quality, electrical equipment manufacturing, electrical inspection, testing, commissioning, or quality assurance/quality control.
   Minimum 7 years of experience should include significant hands-on inspection and testing exposure to electrical distribution and control equipment.
   Demonstrated experience inspecting and witnessing FATs for PDCs/e-houses, switchgear, and MCCs is required.
   Strong knowledge of medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution equipment and associated protection and control systems.
   Demonstrated ability to read and interpret:
o    Single-line diagrams
o    Three-line diagrams
o    Elementary/schematic diagrams
o    Wiring diagrams
o    Interconnection diagrams
o    Equipment layout and general arrangement drawings
o    Electrical specifications and datasheets
o    Supplier drawings and manufacturing documentation
   Demonstrated experience reviewing supplier ITPs, FAT procedures, test reports, quality plans, NCRs, and final documentation packages.
   Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes and standards, including NEC/NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, and UL requirements, as applicable to the equipment and project.
   Familiarity with relevant switchgear standards such as IEEE C37 series and UL 1558, and applicable MCC standards such as UL 845/NEMA ICS, is preferred.
   Knowledge of electrical testing practices and acceptance criteria for switchgear, breakers, protective devices, MCCs, and associated control systems.
   Ability to independently determine whether manufactured electrical equipment complies with approved drawings, specifications, codes, standards, and purchase-order requirements.
   Strong technical writing skills with the ability to prepare clear, detailed, and defensible inspection reports.
   Strong communication skills and ability to professionally interface with suppliers, clients, third-party inspectors, engineering personnel, and project management.
   Ability to manage multiple supplier inspections and priorities with limited supervision.
   Willingness and ability to travel to supplier manufacturing facilities and project locations as required.

Preferred Qualifications
   Previous supplier quality experience supporting large EPC, power generation, oil and gas, petrochemical, industrial, data center, or other major capital projects.
   Experience working directly for or inspecting major switchgear/MCC/PDC manufacturers.
   Experience with medium-voltage equipment, protective relaying, breaker testing, and electrical control systems.
   Experience performing supplier audits and evaluating supplier manufacturing and quality systems.
   Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality management systems.
   Experience coordinating third-party inspection agencies and supplier surveillance resources.
   Relevant electrical inspection, testing, NETA, NICET, quality, or auditor certifications are considered an asset.
