Position Overview

A growing industrial engineering and technology organization is seeking an experienced Construction Manager to lead the field execution of complex industrial construction projects at customer sites throughout the United States.

This individual will have full responsibility for construction activities from pre-construction planning and constructability reviews through installation, commissioning, project closeout, and final customer acceptance. The Construction Manager will serve as the primary field leader responsible for safety, contractor performance, quality, schedule, budget, and communication with customers and internal project teams.

This is a highly visible, hands-on position requiring extensive travel and a strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, piping, structural, and civil construction within industrial processing environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead construction execution from pre-construction planning through project closeout and customer acceptance
• Maintain a strong safety culture and ensure contractors adhere to all site safety requirements and industry best practices
• Manage multiple contractors and subcontractors while holding them accountable for safety, quality, schedule, scope, and performance
• Partner closely with Project Management, Engineering, customers, contractors, and facility leadership throughout project execution
• Participate in constructability reviews and identify potential field issues prior to construction
• Read and interpret P&IDs, CAD drawings, structural steel drawings, electrical drawings, and detailed construction documents
• Manage construction schedules and budgets while proactively identifying potential delays, cost overruns, and project risks
• Monitor field conditions and resolve construction issues quickly to maintain project progress
• Manage scope changes and prevent unnecessary scope creep resulting from customer or contractor requests
• Coordinate local inspections and required project holds with building officials and other authorities
• Oversee construction QA/QC activities, including rotation checks, megger reports, installation verification, and other quality protocols
• Maintain accurate as-built drawings and construction documentation
• Manage document control, including new drawing issues, contract documents, revisions, and change conditions
• Review drawing and scope changes, quantify their potential impact, communicate changes to leadership, and distribute updated information to project teams
• Provide field support during mechanical checkout, system startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer turnover
• Support purchasing and material-management activities, including receipt verification and onsite storage
• Identify cost-saving opportunities and recommend corrective actions when field conditions differ from project plans
• Maintain consistent and timely communication with customers, contractors, engineering teams, project management, and company leadership

Technical Experience

Successful candidates should bring strong industrial construction knowledge across several disciplines, including:

• Civil construction, including site preparation, soils, concrete, rebar, foundations, and structural steel
• Mechanical construction and industrial piping systems
• Electrical systems, including MCCs, switchgear, transformers, motors, and associated wiring
• Controls and automation, including instrumentation installation and wiring
• Mechanical system checkout, startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting
• Construction QA/QC and field inspection
• Contractor management and contract negotiation
• Construction cost and schedule management

Qualifications

• 10+ years of construction, project execution, or related industrial field leadership experience preferred
• Demonstrated Construction Management experience on complex industrial projects
• Experience within chemical processing, bio-refining, renewable fuels, food processing, heavy industrial, process manufacturing, EPC, or similar environments strongly preferred
• Engineering, Construction Management, or related technical degree preferred, but equivalent hands-on industrial construction experience will be considered
• Strong understanding of lump-sum engineering and construction projects preferred
• Proven ability to manage contractors, schedules, budgets, project scope, and customer expectations
• Strong knowledge of construction safety and field QA/QC practices
• Ability to read and understand P&IDs and detailed engineering and construction drawings
• Strong mechanical aptitude with experience supporting system startup and commissioning
• Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, conflict-resolution, planning, and organizational skills
• Ability to make timely decisions in fast-moving field environments
• Professional communication style and ability to effectively interact with customers, contractors, engineering teams, and senior leadership

Leadership Profile

The ideal candidate is a hands-on construction leader who is comfortable taking ownership of a project in the field. This person should be able to anticipate problems before they impact the schedule, hold contractors accountable, make difficult decisions when necessary, and maintain strong customer relationships throughout challenging projects.

Success will ultimately be measured by the ability to consistently deliver projects safely, on schedule, within budget, and to a high standard of quality.

Travel & Location

This position requires extensive travel to customer project sites throughout the United States, with travel potentially reaching 100% depending on active project schedules. Travel expenses are reimbursed.

The individual's home location is flexible, although periodic time at the company's Eastern Iowa office will be required.
