GFT is seeking a Construction Engineering Inspector to join our Construction Services team in Newport News, Norfolk,VA or Virginia Beach VA

 What you'll be challenged to do:As an engineering inspector, you will experience exceptional training and career development opportunities, allowing you to understand dynamics unique to being in the field as part of the construction management function. At the same time, working under the direct charge of experienced field engineers on challenging construction projects.  In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
  • Inspects water and sewer main line construction projects, new water and sewer lateral connection installations, water and sewer lateral connection renewals, water main rehabilitation including cleaning and lining, sewer and manhole rehabilitation, paving, sod and landscaping restoration
  • Inspects Sewer Pumping Station projects and associated force mains and outfall sewers
  • Inspects pipe installation and approves materials on-site for proper quality and report defects, with the ability and authority to reject materials and workmanship
  • Makes decisions relative to the intent of the standard specifications or standard details with the concurrence from the Project/Construction Manager
  • Observes compaction testing of backfilled soils during and after completion of the work
  • Coordinates water main shutdowns, locating and operating valves, chlorination samplings, and any other items necessary for the execution of contract work
  • Verifies grading and alignment of water mains, sewer lines, and appurtenances to assure the work is done within the requirements of the contract
  • Advises contractors of deviations from the provisions of the contract and offers assistance to properly perform work
  • Ensures compliance with required safety precautions and proper traffic control
  • Use a cloud-based construction management software to document the contractor's activities and progress through daily reports and digital as-builts in order to document accurate payment and claim evaluation
  • Performs visual sewer main and manhole final inspections, oversees sewer air and mandrel testing, televising of sewer lateral connections, hydrostatic water main testing, and prepares reports of findings
  • Inspects restoration of areas disturbed during construction
  • Attends pre-construction meetings and monthly progress meetings with local, state and federal agencies
  • Utilizes personal vehicle to travel to and from daily job sites

Work Environment and Physical Demands    

  • May be exposed to seasonal fluctuations in temperatures
  • May be required to enter confined spaces (large pipes, manholes, vaults, etc.)
  • May be exposed to loud noises, fumes, odors, and poor ventilation that would require the use of appropriate personal protection equipment to mitigate these condition
  • Must be able to lift objects that weigh up to 50 lbs

  • Knowledge of and experience with new and rehabilitative pipeline construction and construction practices, procedures and materials such as:
    • Open-Cut
    • Pipe Bursting
    • Horizontal Direction Drilling
    • Jack and Bore
    • Tunnelling
    • CIPP Lining
    • Sliplining
    • Centrifugal Cast Concrete Pipe
    • Cleaning and Lining
  • Knowledge of soil compaction and testing methods
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations, sediment control devices and traffic control standards
  • Knowledge of concrete placement
  • Knowledge of and skills in reading and interpreting construction plans and contract documents
  • Experience with reading and interpreting Standard Specifications and Standard Details
  • Ability to compute volumes and quantities on construction materials
  • Knowledge in interpreting survey field notes
  • Prepare accurate detailed reports of daily project progress
  • Communicates effectively verbally and in writing and able to work in a team environment
  • Enter confined spaces, work outdoors in inclement weather, climb in and out of ditches and other structures under construction
  • Knowledge of computer programs, including but not limited to Word, Excel, Office Outlook
  • Familiarity with Erosion and Sedimentation Control

Minimum Education, Experience Requirements      

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years of experience in construction inspection and/or experience performing construction/installation of underground water and sewer new and/or rehabilitative pipeline.

What we prefer you bring: 

One or more of the following industry certifications are preferred but not required.  GFT will provide training for certain certifications to comply with project requirements.

  • American Concrete Institute (ACI) Field Technician certification
  • MARTCP Soils & Aggregate Technician
  • MDE Responsible Person Card (Erosion and Sedimentation Control) certification
  • MDE Water distribution Operator's License or Waste Water collections license
  • NASSCO Certified in ITCP-CIPP, and/or PACP, MACP & LACP
  • MDOT SHA Temporary Traffic Control certification
  • OSHA 10 hour safety certification
Compensation:The salary range for this role is $65,000 - $85,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location. Featured Benefits:  Hybrid (in-person and remote) work environment.
