The Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Idaho invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Weed Science and Forage Systems. The successful candidate will contribute to an interdisciplinary research and extension project evaluating the impact of weed composition and biomass on alfalfa forage yield, forage nutritive value, dairy animal performance, and production economics. This project integrates field research, statistical modeling, stakeholder engagement, and development of decision-support tools for forage producers. The research aims to advance ecological weed management strategies and provide producers with practical information to optimize forage production, livestock performance, and economic returns. The postdoctoral associate will work closely with faculty investigators, graduate students, and collaborators across multiple institutions to conduct field research, analyze agronomic datasets, and develop interactive web-based decision-support tools using R and Shiny applications.

Position Qualifications
Required Experience
  • Background in weed ecology and weed management in agricultural systems.
  • Proficiency with R statistical software.
  • Experience developing interactive data visualization tools or web applications (e.g., R Shiny).
  • Experience in forage production systems and dairy production systems.
  • Experience with written and oral communication.
Required Education
  • Ph.D. in Weed Science, Agronomy, Crop Science, Plant Science, Forage Science, or a closely related field.

Required Other
  • Ability to travel
  • Ability to work nonstandard business hours which may include weekends and holidays
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving university vehicles or the ability to obtain within three months of hire
  • Posses a valid pesticide applicators license or ability to obtain one within three months of hire
Additional Preferred
  • Experience conducting small plot field research.
  • Experience with alfalfa or other forage production systems.
  • Knowledge of forage nutritive value analysis and livestock nutrition metrics.
  • Experience integrating agronomic datasets with animal production or agricultural economic analyses.
  • Familiarity with ARM trial management software or similar systems.
  • Experience developing decisionsupport tools for agricultural stakeholders.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
