What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Investigative Reporter, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Investigative Reporter, you need strong research, analytical, and writing skills, typically supported by a degree in journalism or communications. Familiarity with data analysis tools, public records databases, and digital research platforms is often required. Persistence, ethical judgment, and effective interpersonal communication distinguish outstanding investigative journalists. These skills and qualities are crucial for uncovering important stories, ensuring accuracy, and building trust with sources and audiences.

What are some common challenges investigative reporters face when working on complex stories?

Investigative reporters often encounter obstacles such as gaining access to reliable sources, verifying information from multiple perspectives, and handling legal or ethical considerations around sensitive topics. The process can be time-consuming and demanding, requiring persistence, discretion, and adaptability. Collaboration with editors, legal teams, and sometimes data analysts is key to ensuring stories are accurate, fair, and impactful while maintaining source confidentiality and journalistic integrity.

What does an Investigative Reporter do?

An Investigative Reporter is a journalist who specializes in uncovering information that is often hidden from the public. They conduct in-depth research, analyze data, interview sources, and follow leads to expose wrongdoing, corruption, or significant social issues. Their work often takes weeks or months and can involve complex subjects such as government, business, or crime. The goal is to inform the public and hold powerful individuals or organizations accountable.

Job description

WSYX/WTTE is searching for our next on-air PROBLEM SOLVER - a reporter who fights for viewers and gets results.

If you're driven by helping people, digging into tough questions, and holding the powerful accountable, this is your newsroom. We're looking for a reporter with strong investigative instincts, a compassionate approach, and the creativity to turn real-world viewer concerns into compelling storytelling.

This is a role for someone who loves solutions as much as they love storytelling-someone who can take complex issues, break them down clearly, and guide people toward answers.

What You'll Do

  • In this high-impact, viewer-focused role, you will:
  • Investigate viewer complaints, consumer issues, and community concerns
  • Identify trends, track down answers, and deliver solutions that make a difference
  • Create, write, shoot, and edit stories for broadcast, digital, and social platforms
  • Provide clear, empathetic on-air reporting that empowers audiences
  • Hold businesses, agencies, and institutions accountable-fairly and accurately
  • Build strong relationships with viewers and community partners
  • Work closely with Producers, Editors, Anchors, & News Directors to elevate your reporting

What You Bring

  • A passion for helping people and uncovering meaningful solutions
  • Strong investigative instincts and the ability to follow a trail until it leads somewhere
  • Experience working with newsroom systems and media production tools
  • Excellent writing, research, and storytelling skills
  • 5 years of experience in reporting (consumer or investigative experience a plus)
  • The ability to stay organized, calm, and focused when deadlines are tight
  • A commitment to accuracy, fairness, and ethical journalism

Who Thrives in This Role

  • Curious minds who ask "Why?"
  • Journalists who enjoy sorting out confusion and making things clear
  • Reporters who believe journalism is a public service
  • Storytellers who want their work to have real-world impact
