DCS Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer, you need a solid understanding of circuit design, electronics, mathematics, and physics, usually backed by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools like MATLAB or PSpice, and knowledge of relevant industry standards or certifications (such as a Professional Engineer license) are commonly expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills set outstanding engineers apart. These competencies are critical for designing safe, efficient electrical systems and collaborating effectively on complex engineering projects.

What are some common challenges Electrical Engineers face when working on multidisciplinary project teams?

Electrical Engineers often collaborate with professionals from mechanical, civil, and software engineering backgrounds. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication and alignment of technical specifications, as each discipline may have different priorities and terminologies. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong teamwork, adaptability, and the ability to translate complex electrical concepts for diverse audiences. Building mutual understanding helps prevent project delays and ensures seamless integration of electrical systems with other components.

What does an Electrical Engineer do?

An Electrical Engineer designs, develops, tests, and supervises the manufacturing of electrical equipment, such as electric motors, radar and navigation systems, communications systems, and power generation equipment. They work in a variety of industries, including energy, manufacturing, telecommunications, and electronics. Their role often involves problem-solving, project management, and ensuring that systems comply with safety and quality standards. Electrical Engineers also collaborate with other engineers and professionals to bring projects from concept to completion.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineer vs Electrical Technician?

AspectElectrical EngineerElectrical Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related fieldAssociate degree or technical diploma in electrical technology
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and testing of electrical systems, often in offices or labsInstallation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical systems, often on-site
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing, power generation, and consultingConstruction, maintenance, and manufacturing industries

Electrical engineers focus on designing and developing electrical systems, requiring a bachelor's degree, while electrical technicians handle installation and maintenance, typically with technical diplomas. Both roles are essential in the electrical industry but differ in responsibilities and educational requirements.

Job Brief

Electrical Engineer--Biodynamics Team

DCS Air & Space Technology sector is seeking a General Engineer to support the Biodynamics Group within AFRL at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The Biodynamics Group conducts research to evaluate human response and injury tolerance to impacts, ejection events, and high-G environments. This role will support the design, integration, execution, and analysis of dynamic test programs both at WPAFB and at remote test locations. For this role, we desire a candidate from most engineering disciplines, who is well-rounded with both electrical and mechanical skills. Any previous experience and interest in fabrication, hand tools, and mechanical/electrical troubleshooting is a plus.

Essential Job Functions:

Design, develop, and integrate instrumentation systems for anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs) and biodynamic test platforms.

Support setup, execution, and teardown of dynamic tests including sled, drop tower, and vibration testing.

Analyze test data using signal processing techniques and develop post-processing methodologies.

Develop and document electrical schematics, wiring harnesses, and data acquisition system (DAS) interfaces.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to design and fabricate test fixtures and support hardware.

Support calibration and validation of sensors including accelerometers, load cells, and angular rate sensors.

Prepare technical reports, test plans, and documentation for government and commercial customers.

Coordinate and execute remote test operations, including travel to remote test sites across the United States. Travel up to 10 days at a time may be necessary.

Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and customer requirements during all test activities.

Required Skills:

Due to the sensitivity of customer-related requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level U.S. DoD security clearance.

Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical, or related field) with 2+ years of relevant experience (or advanced degree with applicable experience).

Experience with instrumentation, data acquisition systems, and sensor integration.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including experience with data analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB or similar).

Ability to read and develop technical drawings, schematics, and engineering documentation.

Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

Willingness to travel (up to two weeks at a time, multiple times per year).

Desired Skills:

Experience with crash testing, biomechanics, or human subject research.

Familiarity with high-speed data acquisition, signal conditioning, and filtering techniques.

Hands-on experience with fabrication, machining, or prototyping (e.g., 3D printing).

Experience with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) and electrical design tools.

Prior experience working in DoD or government research environments.
