Job description

Fahrenheit Advisors is assistingGrayCo, Inc., a family-owned real estate investment and property management company headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, in the search for a strategic HR Director. This is an opportunity to lead HR operations and shape organizational culture across headquarters and growing regional operations throughout the Southeast.
Position Summary
Reporting to the President, the HR Director will oversee the full employee lifecycle, partner with executive leadership on HR strategy, and ensure compliance across multiple states. This role requires a hands-on HR leader who balances strategic initiatives with day-to-day execution while building scalable processes to support company growth.
Key Responsibilities
  • Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws across multiple jurisdictions; identify and address employment-related risks.
  • HR Strategy & Leadership: Lead workforce planning, organizational development, succession planning, employee engagement, and HR budgeting.
  • Employee Relations: Manage employee relations programs, workplace investigations, conflict resolution, corrective action, and policy administration.
  • Recruiting & Talent Acquisition: Lead recruitment strategies and staffing initiatives to attract and retain qualified talent across all locations.
  • HR Administration & Systems: Develop and maintain employee handbook, policies, onboarding programs, records, and documentation with high accuracy and confidentiality. Identify opportunities to improve HR systems and workflows.
  • Compensation & Benefits: Direct compensation strategies and administer benefits and leave programs.
  • Payroll Administration: Serve as payroll subject matter expert and liaison between corporate leadership, sites, Finance, and payroll providers.
  • Performance Management: Develop performance management processes that support accountability and development.
  • Leadership Development: Partner with leaders to strengthen capabilities and succession planning.
  • Travel: Approximately 30% travel to regional offices and property locations as needed.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (preferred)
  • 10+ years progressive HR experience, including 5+ years in leadership roles
  • Broad HR generalist background: recruiting, employee relations, compliance, performance management, onboarding, policy development, HR administration
  • Experience with multi-state organizations and distributed operations
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state employment laws
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and influence leaders across organizational levels
  • Dominion Payroll or similar payroll systems experience (preferred)
  • Professional HR certification-SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR (preferred)
