Job description

Material Handler (Day Shift) – Temp to Hire

Location: 11525 Illinois Highway 142, Mt. Vernon, IL
Shift: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM (12-hour shifts)
Schedule: Pitman Schedule (rotating days, every other weekend off)


Position Overview

We are seeking dependable Material Handlers to support operations at a customer facility (not a landfill). This role involves a mix of forklift operation, manual labor, and recycling processes in a fast-paced industrial environment.

This is a temp-to-hire opportunity, with the potential to convert to a full-time Waste Management employee within 60–90 days based on performance.


Key Responsibilities
  • Operate forklifts (training and certification provided onsite)
  • Load and unload materials, including tires, into trailers and dumpsters
  • Sort, handle, and bale recyclable materials
  • Move materials manually and with equipment
  • Maintain accurate documentation of work performed
  • Follow all safety procedures and supervisor direction
  • Work closely with project managers and site personnel

Requirements
  • Must have:
    • Steel-toe boots (required)
    • Gloves
    • High-visibility vest
    • Safety glasses
  • Valid state ID
  • Ability to lift 25–50 lbs regularly
  • Comfortable working in a dirty, industrial environment
  • Ability to work 12-hour shifts on a rotating schedule
  • Must be 18+ and legally authorized to work in the U.S.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous forklift experience (not required — training provided)
  • High school diploma or GED (or ability to obtain within 90 days)
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Schedule Details (Pitman Schedule)
  • Week 1: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday
  • Week 2: Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday
  • Every other weekend off

Work Environment
  • Industrial setting at a tire manufacturing facility
  • Exposure to heat, cold, dirt, noise, and odors
  • Physical, hands-on work throughout the shift
