Role: Process Development Engineer
Location: Dorado, PR
Length of Contract: 12+ Months
Position Description
The Process Development Engineer will lead and support the characterization, validation, optimization, and scale-up of new manufacturing processes and equipment. Operating in an FDA-regulated medical device environment (21 CFR Part 820 / ISO 13485), this role ensures seamless transition from process development to high-volume manufacturing through structured IQ/OQ/PQ protocols, robust statistical methods (DOE/PFMEA), and cross-functional technical leadership.
Responsibilities
  • Process & Equipment Validation: Design, execute, and document Installation, Operational, and Performance Qualifications (IQ/OQ/PQ) and Process Performance Qualifications (PPQ); draft Master Validation Plans (MVP) and Validation Summary Reports (VSR).
  • Test Method & Inspection Development: Develop and validate receiving and in-process inspection systems, fixtures, gauge R&R studies, and test methods for new components and automated processes.
  • Process Optimization & Root-Cause Analysis: Apply Design of Experiments (DOE), PFMEA, CAPA, and structured root-cause investigation tools (5-Why, Fishbone) to characterize manufacturing windows, eliminate process variability, and boost yields.
  • Automation & Equipment Integration: Oversee the integration of automated manufacturing equipment incorporating PLCs, servo motors, pneumatic systems, optical vision systems, and specialized joining tech (e.g., laser welding, heat bonding, micro-assembly, injection molding).
  • Documentation & Technical Standards: Author and update technical documentation including Manufacturing Execution System (MES) routes, standard operating procedures (SOPs), preventative maintenance (PM) routines, calibration procedures, and engineering change orders (ECOs).
  • Project Management & Collaboration: Lead multi-disciplinary project workstreams (Quality, R&D, Operations, Regulatory) from process concept through commercial implementation, tracking deliverables against strict timeline milestones.
Qualifications
  • Experience: 5–7+ years of hands-on process development, manufacturing engineering, or quality engineering experience within an FDA-regulated environment (Medical Devices preferred, Biotech/Pharma).
  • Regulatory Compliance: Expert knowledge of Quality System Regulations (QSR) 21 CFR Part 820, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  • Technical Mastery: Proven track record in automated/semi-automated equipment qualification, tooling/fixture design, component assembly, and advanced manufacturing processes (laser welding, ultrasonic welding, heat staking, or vision systems).
  • Statistical Tools: Proficiency in Minitab or equivalent software for process capability (
Education
  • Required: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Preferred: Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification; Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
